I noticed on the timeline that it says apply for a SSN upon arriving in the US, so you can work and stuff, but then you have to go right back and change your name when you get married.

My question is this: We plan on getting married within just a few days of her arrival to the US, and she won't be needing a drivers license in that week, so can we just wait to apply for the SSN until AFTER we're married to avoid two trips?

You can but it won't be your last trip to SSA... You will need to visit once again after you receive your greencard to update your immigration status.

My wife waited with the name change until after greencard and changed it all on the second visit...

Wonderful, thank you! I don't mind going multiple times, I expect the hassle. I just figured I'd avoid making two trips in two weeks if I didn't have to.

SSN is NOT work authorization, EAD stamp, EAD card, or Green-card IS.

Yes, we did just that, we applied for SSN shortly after marriage, and got SSN card in married name. Keep in mind, many people do run into morons at the SSA office that wont issue an SSN after marriage, they are convinced that the SSN name needs to match what USCIS has on file, and wont issue until you have EAD or Green-card with married name on it.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.
