Hamas breaks ceasefire

Two rockets 'strike Israeli town'

At least two rockets fired by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have hit the Israeli border town of Sderot, Israeli police have said.

No casualties have been reported in the what is apparently the first rocket attack since last week's truce in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

Earlier, Israeli forces killed two Palestinians at a university building in the West Bank city of Nablus.

One of those killed was a member of the Islamic Jihad militant group.

Local reports say the other man was a student who was not a militant. The Israeli army said both men were armed.

Islamic Jihad has said attacks on its militants in the West Bank could jeopardise a six-month truce in the Gaza Strip, which started last week.

The Israeli army said the Islamic Jihad member, Tareq Abu Ghali, had been planning a bomb attack and that troops had found weapons and explosives in his rooms.

The official Palestinian news agency said both men had multiple bullet wounds and that one had been shot in the head at close range.

BBC Gaza correspondent Aleem Maqbool says the deaths are likely to test the Egyptian-brokered truce.

While the West Bank is not covered by this truce, incidents like these have put a strain on similar ceasefires in the past.

Mortar attack

The violence came as the truce between Israel and the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip went into its sixth day.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army said a mortar had been fired from Gaza into Israel late on Monday, about three hours before the Nablus operation.

No group has admitted responsibility for the mortar attack, which caused no casualties, and Israel said it did not consider the strike to be a breach of the Gaza ceasefire.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is travelling to the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for talks with President Hosni Mubarak.

Their meeting is expected to focus on the ceasefire's progress and on a prisoner swap that forms part of the agreement.

Cairo wants Israel to reopen the Rafah crossing point between Egypt and Gaza, but Israel has made it clear the crossing will be opened only if its captured soldier, Gilad Shalit, is released by Hamas.

A rocket apparently fired by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip hit an Israeli border town on Tuesday, the volunteer rescue service Zaka said. A Reuters correspondent reported hearing two explosions in the town of Sderot. Zaka said there were no casualties from the attack, which would be the first of its kind since Israel and Gaza's Islamist Hamas rulers entered an Egyptian-brokered truce last week.

it was on the west bank and not gaza, where the truce with hamas is..so, it is incorrect that hamas broke the truce

All previous bets are now officially off.
