yes, that is hysterical. i love when the news or any other idiots (although i think newscaster implies idiot) calls a black british guy african american or any other similar situation.

i've enraged many people by my refusal to ever utter the term "african american". you are american or not. sorry, if your physical appearance needs to be described, then i will say it as it is.

word!! on both points

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

As usual people get so caught up in the trivialities that they forget that this has real meaning to marginalized people. The terminology sucks, but the fact that chinese people were discriminated against because of the wording of certain post apartheid laws is very important and as such, this ruling is a good thing.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I'm First Nation American , but people just call me Nagi. *runs with Sister Fracas*

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

whew, can we stop now? I had a burrito bowl for lunch and my stomach hurts...

Back to the OP

making them eligible for benefits for those discriminated against under the former apartheid regime

Failing to see what's so bad about that...

I agree with both of these points. Calling them "black" is odd....to US, but giving them the benefits they are entitled to is right.

The term black (often capped) is still acceptable, and indeed commonly used, in scholarly literature.

My husband doesn't understand the term African American.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Maybe it's time to begin the process of weaning ourselves off the labels? We don't need to know a persons particular skin tone in most situations. Yes, I accept the fact that it has been necessary to keep a tally on the progress of various communities in the process of equalization. However, that is a very particular requirement and not one that most of us have any need of. We really don't need these labels in our day to day lives.

Tell your husband that the term African American refers to those black americans who came in this country and don't know which the country they came from. For example, you husband once a us citizen can be called African Jamaican American.
