How do I apply for social security for my wife, what department do I send to and what are the forms and fees. Also, our marriage is being sent to the state still cause we just got married. It will take maybe 2 weeks they say. Can we apply now for social security.

No fee to apply for a number. Needs to be applied for within 76 days after entry on a K-1 visa, if not then EAD or Green-card will be required in order to get a number. K-3 cannot get SSN until they have EAD or Green-card.

you can apply at your local SSA office anywheres from day 1 to 76 after K-1 entry.

Well, i think it's better for you to wait for your marriage certificate to arrive after 2 weeks

so that she will be using her married name in the SS card. And you won't be doing some

name change in the future.

You can go to this website: http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10002.html

It tells you what is needed to apply, and you can print and complete the form before going to SSA office. That's what I did.

You have to go to an SSA office to apply. There are links at the above website that will give you your local office. They are fairly quick and sent mine within 10 days. No Fee.

Hope it helps. Good luck.
