Which American Bank to transfer money into?

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be in America as of Saturday (Woohoo!!) and I had a few questions regarding Bank accounts;

I plan to open up an American Bank account ASAP, but I want to open it with one that won't charge large fees to transfer money to/from my British bank account...

Does anyone have any suggestions?

What bank should I go for?

What type of account should I get?

Are you someone who moved from the UK to the USA? If so, what did YOU do?

Just pick any U.S. bank in your area that won't charge monthly meintanence fee for a regular checking account. Wachovia and Washington Mutual are the ones I know about. Also Bank of America has that option if you open an account online. As to transfering money from UK, the best option would be PayPal, since those banks do charge you for wire transfers. Try searching the forum. There was a topic on couple weeks ago about sending money from UK through PayPal. Good luck in America

Washington Mutual does not charge for outgoing wires, and for incoming wires it's only $10

We're using Custom House

XE Trade works in alliance with Custom House so I think their services are pretty much identical. They are both good companies to use.
