Hi!

I know there's a specific thread about EI and I have read most of it over the last weeks (20 pages....).

However I just wanted to validate a few points related to EI:

Note: My last day of work will be thursday this week (June 26) and I will be moving to Florida on sunday (June 29).

- When should I appply for EI? Is it better if I wait until I'm already moved in the US or should I do it before I move?

- Where should I apply? (online or by the phone?)

- I will receive my ROE only a couple of weeks after my last day of work (so sometime around mid-July i guess). Can I still apply for EI and send them the ROE + I-94 later?

- Do I send originals of the ROE and the I-94 or only copies?

- Do I need to send them a marriage certificate once I'm married?

I know, I know....that's a lot of questions :-)

Thanks in advance for your help!

You're going to be leaving in a week. I'd just wait until you move. Just don't leave it too long!

- Where should I apply? (online or by the phone?) You can apply on-line.

- I will receive my ROE only a couple of weeks after my last day of work (so sometime around mid-July i guess). Can I still apply for EI and send them the ROE + I-94 later? You HOPE you will receive your ROE a couple of weeks after work.... Apply without it, DO NOT WAIT FOR YOUR ROE. Once you get it, send it in.

- Do I send originals of the ROE and the I-94 or only copies? I sent in copies. After I got my GC, and/or when you get your EAD, if you call them, they'll probably let you just scan and email it, or fax it in.

- Do I need to send them a marriage certificate once I'm married? I can't remember if they asked for that or not? When I applied on-line, after I got here, they said what you needed to send them. I don't think I did send them my marriage certificate though! Hmm, no, I couldn't have, as I applied well before I got married.

I know, I know....that's a lot of questions :-) Nope not too many!

Thanks in advance for your help!

I was told to mail in the original of the ROE. Just make sure u make a copy of everything u mail in!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Just don't send them your original I-94 -- you will need it for the AOS process.

Sorry if I'm asking a stupid question... but I can apply for EI as a resident of another country? How does that work? I had no idea...

I'm going to have to go looking for that thread that was mentioned.

Just another reason (out of the many) why I'm so glad I came across VJ... learn something new (and very helpful!) everyday! :D

Thanks! :star:

Yes you can apply for Canada EI in the USA. The US is the only other country you can collect regular EI in.

File for EI one day after you get to your new home in the USA. Earlier the better. Don't bother waiting for your ROE to show up. FILE FIRST!

You will need to send the original ROE later on (after you've gotten it and made a photocopy for yourself).

Make a photo copy of your visa and your I-94. Send them in with the ROE.....No need for the marriage certificate. You wouldn't get getting a K visa unless you were planning on getting married. And you can't get an EAD/Greencard without a marriage certificate.
