My wife (immigrant) and I (USC) are moving to the U.S. in August. My wife got her spouse visa (IC1) last month. We have reserved airline tickets, but our layover at the point of entry (Detroit) is only 1 hour and 45 minutes. Normally, I would not be concerned, but since my wife has to give her visa documents and other things, I am a little concerned about missing the connection. How long does the point of entry process usually take? The only other option we have gives us a 6 hour layer over (sooo long). I would rather not have to wait 6 hours, but if the point of entry usually takes a long time, I guess it's better than missing the connection.

Any experiences/advice?

Thanks,

John

It's hard to say because the plane could be delayed, the lines could be long, the IO could give you problems....but I'd imagine that almost 2 hours would be sufficient time. Make sure you speed walk through everything that you can - don't waste any time once you land. Your wife can go through the "USC" line since she will be arriving with an immigrant visa. Good luck!

Our POE was actually the last leg of our trip, but I think it took about 20 minutes (in Miami).

We have just under two hours for our connection as well....but I figure if we miss it, they will just put us on the next one. We are flying through Philly and the lines in immigration can be hellish and the security re-check worse. Luckily for us though, Philly has hourly flights into Boston so we should be ok.

Thanks all,

We checked around a bit more and found a flight with a four hour layover. It goes to an airport slightly farther from home than I would like, but still close enough my parents can pick us up without much trouble. I decided instead of risk missing the flight and/or worrying about it the next two months just to change the tickets to the other flight.

Of course, now that we have a long layover, I'm sure we will make it through immigration in about 15 minutes.

John
