Section8 program cause of rising crime in midsize cities across America

Falling crime rates have been one of the great American success stories of the past 15 years. New York and Los Angeles, once the twin capitals of violent crime, have calmed down significantly, as have most other big cities.

...

Lately, though, a new and unexpected pattern has emerged, taking criminologists by surprise. While crime rates in large cities stayed flat, homicide rates in many midsize cities (with populations of between 500,000 and 1 million) began increasing, sometimes by as much as 20 percent a year ... According to FBI data, America’s most dangerous spots are now places where Martin Scorsese would never think of staging a shoot-out—Florence, South Carolina; Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina; Kansas City, Missouri; Reading, Pennsylvania; Orlando, Florida; Memphis, Tennessee.

...

Janikowski [A criminologist with the University of Memphis] merged his computer map of crime patterns with Betts’s [a housing expert at the University of Memphis] map of Section8 rentals ... The match was near-perfect. On the merged map, dense violent-crime areas are shaded dark blue, and Section8 addresses are represented by little red dots. All of the dark-blue areas are covered in little red dots, like bursts of gunfire. The rest of the city has almost no dots.

Betts remembers her discomfort as she looked at the map ... She knew right away that this would be a “hard thing to say or write.” Nobody in the antipoverty community and nobody in city leadership was going to welcome the news that the noble experiment that they’d been engaged in for the past decade had been bringing the city down, in ways they’d never expected. But the connection was too obvious to ignore.

...

Simultaneously, the University of Louisville criminologist Geetha Suresh was tracking local patterns of violent crime ... In her research, Suresh noticed a recurring pattern, one that emerged first in the late 1990s, then again around 2002. A particularly violent neighborhood would suddenly go cold, and crime would heat up in several new neighborhoods. In each case, Suresh has now confirmed, the first hot spots were the neighborhoods around huge housing projects, and the later ones were places where people had moved when the projects were torn down. From that, she drew the obvious conclusion: “Crime is going along with them.” Except for being hand-drawn, Suresh’s map matching housing patterns with crime looks exactly like Janikowski and Betts’s.

Crime and poverty does go hand and hand. Doesn't the criminologist know that? Because of the lack of competent people capable of analyzing news, this news can turn a reader into a stereotypical lunatic.

ugh....I loathe section 8 housing. all those trashy kids running around with no one telling them no. they had built some brand new apartments across the road from the library and part of them were section 8. they have to have a police officer in the library because the parents drop their kids off at the library so they don't have to pay for a sitter. they steal stuff, make loads of noise, and drive people crazy. they've started ticketing parents who leave their kids there all day in the summer now.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

Would that they were the only ones "eliminated" that way.

Yup, when the 'animals' wipe each other out they take out innocents in the process. That was what was wrong with the public housing projects, which is why the movement began to demolish them and go to this Section8 housing model. Unfortunately, that appears to have followed through into the Section8 model.

I have to agree with Scott. Our dear Dawn from MENA was just killed by one of those drunk idiots (who had been arrested for the same thing before).

I do hate to say it, but where there is poverty there is an inordinate amount of crime, and when the poverty moves it brings the crime with it.

I don't know who wrote this. But it's an interesting read.

We are undergoing the Paris-ification of America. The snobbish French always thought Americans were nuts to let Washington, the capital of the country, and New York, the capital of the world, turn into hellholes. Why build public housing projects in the middle of your great cities for riff-raff? The French elite, no fools, kept beautiful Paris for themselves. They warehoused their African immigrants out in the bleak suburbs, where every night is Car-B-Que night.

My theory: much of this relentless churning-about of the American population is intentionally driven by public policy. That's because population change benefits developers, who are politicians' close personal friends.

...

Sure, naïve academics may be surprised when homeowners flee the black underclass or Hispanic illegal immigrants. But developers, real estate brokers, mortgage brokers and the rest of the Real Estate Industrial complex aren't blinded by political correctness.

They can see what's coming. And they like what they see.

Hence, a major reason for much of what politicians do (and don't do, such as not enforcing the borders) is to roil the population, encourage people to move, in order to give their real estate industry campaign contributors more business.

Here's how politicians think:

*Tear down the inner city housing projects and put up Yup-topias in their place? Great idea!

*Let in millions of illegal immigrants? Why not?

*The ex-residents of the projects and the illegals inevitably destroy the inner suburbs? Then the lower middle class refugees will escape by buying brand new homes in the distant exurbs built by our campaign contributors!… who will employ the illegals as cheap construction labor! What's not to love?! !

*And our friends in the road-construction industry will get fat contracts to connect the new exurbs to the jobs downtown!

*And then, in the near future, when the high price of gasoline makes these new exurbs unaffordable for commuters, and they collapse in a wave of foreclosures, we will tear down the now-ruined inner suburbs, move the unemployed criminal element out to the rotting exurbs, and charge the middle class for new construction in the rebuilt inner suburbs where they'd started. Brilliant!

Sure, all this construction will waste a fortune that could have been spent competing with the Chinese.

And all this moving about will disrupt lives and friendships nurtured over decades.

But the campaign contributors will be in heaven!

Let's do it!

IMO for the size of Charlotte, I don't think the crime is as 'alarming' as they say.. it might be for dem country people but compared to other places the size of Charlotte, crime is not that bad... there's neighborhoods in Guadalajara with twice the crime rate as the whole metro area of CLT

Well, again, this is America. It's supposed to be different here.

There are neighborhoods in India that would make Camden or even Detroit look like paradise, but that isn't the point.

Because this is America.

Sounds like a lot of the spoiled brats from the Escalade end of our town. But hey, none of those Mommas have a daily little helper that helps them crash and burn while the kiddies are out on play dates now, do they?

Maybe it isn't the poverty as much as the parenting.

I have on more than one occasion been in line behind someone at the grocery store who is cashing WIC checks and food stamps (programs of which I'm a strong supporter) and then seen that person driving out of the parking lot in a VERY expensive car (once an Escalade, twice a BMW SUV), and of course talking on a cell phone that costs more than I can afford. I believe in these programs but there is so much fraud and abuse

I used to spend a lot of time alone at the library as a kid if I had no school and mom had to work. I read lots of books.
