MEPIS allows you to run it from a CD or DVD first to see if you like it before installing it.

Unbuntu does too, I used it for awhile but was never happy with WoW in Linux so I'm back on my copy of XP

My typical smartass answer to your question is the best version of Linux is XP (IMO) but that doesn't help you at all so I will keep it to myself...

I don't know about MEPIS, I actually might try that myself!! I've used SUSE for quite a while on and off dual boot

with XP and at times in a VM when I didn't dual boot. It's quite easy to use and get going! If you end up going back to the dark side keep in mind time is running out for XP now last I heard Microsoft set June 30th as the cutoff? I'm sure it'll still be available on eBay for a while after that.
