There is no way that if this happened at the beginning of a relationship I would stay with him. After many many years with that person I can understand how it would be a difficult one-time deal, I'm leaving you thing. My ex-husband never hit me (thank God or someone in my family would probably be in jail for killing him) but he totally went off one time (after a year and 2 months of marriage) and threw a lamp, cleared off the kitchen counter (including a deep fryer full of grease, at least it hadn't been recently used so it only left stains, not burns), pushed over a table, and punched 7 holes in the wall. My poor doggy was shivering in my lap he was so scared. I left him for a weekend, then went back trying to make up with him, he wanted to fix the damage he had done, etc. 2 weeks later he cheated on me, confessed, then starting scratching his wrists with a huge kitchen knife and said he would kill himself if I left him. I called the cops to take him to the emergency room, then left him. When I came back a couple weeks later to get the rest of my stuff, I picked a day he was supposed to be working. The bum had called in sick to work, was home and wanted to 'talk'. I told him I just came to get my stuff, so he said "fine, take your sh**" and threw my 3-cd stereo system at me, busting into a million pieces. When I ran out of the house crying, my mom (who was waiting for me in the driveway) came to the door, trying to convince him peacefully that we just came to get a few things. He yelled and pointed in her face telling her he had no right to come into his house, etc. That was the second time I called the cops on him, they just supervised while he literally threw my stuff into trash bags and out onto the front porch.

Now, more than 2 years after leaving him I am finally soon to be with a man who knows how to treat me right. I have never been happier (other than the stress of being apart, all this daggone paperwork, etc) and am 100% sure that this is the man of my dreams...literally.

Best wishes to all, I don't wish any kind of abuse - physical, emotional, or any other kind - on any one, male or female, ever.

Just thought I'd share my story although this topic is a wee bit old.

Nope, never experienced any of that, thank God.

My husband and I have a high degree of respect for one another, so no abuse, not physical or verbal. It was difficult for me to get used to it, but he was very bothered by ANY bad or harsh language directed towards him. For example, I couldn't ever call him stupid, not even jokingly. In the beginning I used to think he was such a wimpy person for that, I mean not even to joke c'mon, but as years went on, I recognized the value of it. In 6 years he has NEVER EVER said anything hurtful to me. Not one bad word, not one attribute that was not favorable, and he always calls me out when I call him a not-so-pretty name. I have kind of a mean sense of humor so it took a lot for me to adjust and not blurt stuff out to him when joking or when angry. I learned to respect that in him, and today it makes me secure in my belief that I will never endure any sort of abuse from him. Me... I am still learning to reciprocate, but I have gotten a lot better :)

His religious upbringing (Islam) has a lot to do with this...

My current spouse is a USC and is a wonderful person. I too have been in a previous abusive relationship and probably would of let him kill me before leaving if he hadn't been arrested for attempted murder against me. That was the beginning of a long road of recovery for me. My saving grace was that he was physically removed from me so I was able to receive the help I needed. I was so convinced that everything was my fault and if I was better then he would be better. It didn't work obviously, but I am alive today and living a wonderful life with someone I love.

I love being a Canadian.

Thankfully this has never happened to me, although I know women that this has happened too. I wish them the strength to leave and move on. There is always something better out there. No one deserves that.
