Well, from Tunisian friends that I know who went throu INS ... the marriage visa is easiet to get in Tunis. And to get married, your SO would have to be registered resident and the waiting time for marriage cert would be about 3 weeks. So you would have to plan for that!

Good luck with your visa and marriage!

Sorry I couldn't help this part either hehe .... That's not true... You get your marriage certificate the same day or next day after you are married..- Most of the time right at the marriage in the magistrate you walk away with a copy in French and Arabic.

If you want to have that translated to English, you can go to any of the translators ( I like Mohsen Beldi on Rue De Grece / Tunis near the train station, but any will do) and you drop it off and with in hours to the next day you will have that back.

If they are already married, I am assuming that they have the marriage certificate on hand - However getting a copy is also very fast and one day in most places.

It takes about 3-5 days to have the married information appear on the Tunisian's birth certificate which is also proof of their marriage. It will state who the Tunisian married and when and what "regime" of marriage they took (communal, etc - has to do with prenups or what not )

Because the OP was vague, I'm not sure if one of them is American and the other Tunisian or not... But there are cases where 2 non Tunisians married in Tunis as well ( often I've seen Algerians and Libyans that married in Tunis - cases where they were not able to go into their SO's country for whatever reason - and not just processed through their embassy - I'm not sure how that works exactly, but it's do able, so you don't have to be a resident of Tunisia to do this )

If you are not already married, you will have to visit the American embassy before you marry and take the affadavit of eligibility to marry - I can scan and upload a copy if you need to see what it looks like, just PM and I will let you know! There is a small fee 25-30 USD for it and it's just basically showing them passport, id cards, and proof that you are not currently married, swearing that and signing the form. The form is in French, as you will take it to the baldi ... (the man that marries you )

Please let me know if you still have questions, problems, need addresses, resources, anything .. I have most of it and I can really be of help! So many people helped me here and I just want to give back whatever I can!!!

No problem Henia

It's just that I know there isn't much information out there at all about Tunis and I was hoping to help the OP out.

I'm not sure if either of them are Tunisinio either, but I suppose they will come back if they need help :)

The laws are not really "different" for foreigners to marry, but it's just that the documentation they bring has to be more extensive - foreign birth certificates, passports, identity cards, etc - As a Tunisian would have all that information already registered with in the Ministry of Information/Interior...

That is what my friend told Ash ... so I donnow. But thanks for clearing that up! But it could have been that neither of them were Tunezian ... maybe the laws are different for foreigners. ?!

I recommend marrying with a notary. You can find their names by looking for the list of translators. Marrying 2 non tunisians involves alot more ( I was married in Tunisia by the way) You have to have a birth certificate from his country and yours not more than 30 days old. You have to have a police certificate. You have to have certificate of singleness from his country. You will need to get one from yours. You will need two medicals. It took us a full 8 days to get married and we still left without our certicates. I had to pay 100 just to get someone to go down to the courthouse and get 2 one dollar copies. You will need several originals of our contract to marry ( cost me 50 dollars each when they are only 2 dollars) All in all the money asking and hints for bribing was horrific and getting married there was one of the worst experiences of my life. Add on visits to both embassies...

Marrying a Tunisian is quite easy for an American cause he is in his own country. Throw in a mix of Libyan or Algerian, all the advice you are giving no longer applies plus the politeness level hits a new low, then throw in constant pitches for money. What should have cost 100 turned into 600 and then another 100 just to get copies which no one wanted to give us once they had their money in their hands. If you can avoid marriage and stick with k1, please do. It took me 3 months to get copies finally of everything. It is Absolutely NOT THE SAME for non Tunisians marrying there as it is for Tunisians. Absolutely not the same. I saw a mixed African ( like zimbawe or something ) trying to marry an American and they had a baby and every time they turned a corner, the tunisians did something else awful to them. It took them a full 4 weeks. Me it took over a week but we really paid and paid and paid.

marriage in tunisia NOT recommended for non Tunisians. I did it and I would say if you can get a k1 spare yourself the bribes, rudeness and agony. Marrying a Tunisian is fine though...
