Hey guys,

I am now pregnant for 9 weeks and currently living in US for good with my husband. I hold my 2-year Green Card also. I am thinking that I will return Vietnam to have birth over there since my whole big family is there & they can take a great care of me and our baby. (Don't get me wrong if you think that my husband can't take care of me, but somehow I do want to come back for delivery overthere, to be close with my dearest family that I have been far away from them almost 8 months). My husband would let me do like that if everything is okay with baby like after giving birth, she/he will get a US birth certificate that will be issued from US consulate & become US citizen after that. So, my question is if anyone ever has been through this, pls let me know.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Tks in advance.

1.) My VNs wife preferred to have the baby in USA because of better, cleaner & safer "piece of mind" hospital treatment, plus the same OBGYN who monitored her progress for 9 nine months also delivered the baby. My wife's sisters, who live in VN and recently gave birth, were all envious of my wife's better delivery conditions in the USA. less painful in usa :-)

2.) After the baby arrived, we applied for a Visa for her mom to visit the USA and that process happened quickly (more difficult getting the flight than the actual visa), and her mom stayed with us in the USA for almost six months to help with the baby.

3.) If the baby's father is American then the baby will be granted a USA citizenship regardless. Yes, the ASC (American Citizen Services) section of the HCMC consulate should issue a USA passport for your baby. I don't know about the birth certificate, issued by local gov't agency. (it should state that the father is a USA citizen)

4.) Of course, this is a personal decision and yes my wife would have loved to have her immediate family near her during the whole birthing process and fortunately we had FULL medical insurance because it's much more expensive in the USA vs VN. (another consideration)

Good luck and have a healthy delivery.....

Tks Patrick for your infos.

1. I believe that it’s safe to have birth in Vietnam, my country since everything there seems to be more modern including hospital facility. I am currently working in the factory near where I live, and have medical insurance from the factory in which it covers my pregnancy fee. However, I just use the insurance for checking up baby until I come back Vietnam for delivery. My family as well as my husband wants me to give birth in US, but I can’t. I’m dying to go back my country, Vietnam. Plus, I put my faith in God & Mother Maria, so everything will be fine for me & baby :)

2. I intend to stay in VN for 4 months only, after that me, my baby & my mom will return America. Same with you, we want her overhere to take care of the baby while I get back to work & study. My husband will sponsor her according travel visa type.

3. My husband is an American. So like what you have just said in the post, my baby will be granted as an USA citizenship??? If so, that would be great. Do you know how long does it take for that? According to my plan, I wish I can return America after one month giving birth? I am not sure that I can obtain all necessary papers for my baby within one month or not?

Do you have more any information about having baby delivered in VN? Like what type of paper should I take with me when going back Vietnam?

Tks again,

Lan&Mike

If you need to ask someone else whether or not it's a good idea to give birth to your child in a foreign country, it's probably NOT. You know very well the ONLY person knows the best answer to your question is YOU.

Personally, I don't get it why people desire to give birth to their children in a country like VN. A newborn is NOT like a 3 year-old kid. Lan, do you know I do EVERYTHING in my power, including consulting my God, to make sure I have health insurance so my wife have the best health care coverage for herself and our baby? I don't mean to be negative but you need to come to America in a boat, like the boat people of the 80's and I doubt you will NOT ask questions like this one on this board.

PS. Make sure to wear "Noi Com Dien" for your new-born in VN ok?

I don't mean to be indelicate, but lady, you are crazy! I have been in Cho Ray hospital, and I know about other hospitals in Vietnam. I don't understand why you would want to travel halfway around the world, be away from your husband, and receive sub-standard health care. If you want your mother to be with you, apply for a visa for her. It is early enough now.

Good luck to you!

I was wondering if there may be another Viet Nam, because it didn't sound like the one that I had been to! In all fairness I didn't visit any hospitals, but I've heard the stories.

It's obviously a personal choice. I wish you the best of health and luck.

I don't think granting citizenship to your kid is as simple as it may seem. Things may potentially get complicated. There may be problems with you child's birth certificate, they may require a paternity test, even a DNA test. Keep it simple. Have your kid here and go back afterwards. I don't have an issue with quality of healthcare you'll be recieving. I'm sure the MD's and nurses in Vietnam know what they're doing. Child birth is relatively simple, you should be fine. My issue is why would you pay for your medical services in VN, when you can have them free here. It may not cost that much in Vietnam, but still.

This may be a minor point but, I'm assuming you won't go to Vietnam, until late in your pregnancy. Travelling at that stage may not be wise. Another thing, Some insurances require you to add newborns within a certain timeframe. More importantly, some require birth certificates. I'm not saying that this is impossible to do from VN, but it may get tricky.

I'm sure you and your baby will be fine, regardless of your your hospital is, but logistically, it will be better if you have your kid here.

Give birth in the USA. No complications. Automatic citizenship. Get the child a passport and THEN go to Vietnam.

You have my words  . I don't like communist's system. :bonk:

I'm concurred with you 110%, automatic USC, birth certificate, etc. why in Vietnam? If she is my wife, no way she is going there to have a baby!!!
