Hello all:

History: My girlfriend(GF) lives in Colombia and I am an American citizen. GF's parents are immigrants to USA. GF's father applied via I-130 filed in 2000 (I did not know her then.)to obtain visa for my GF (his daughter).

4/7/08: the I-130 is approved. The Affidavit of Support (1-864) processing fee of $70.00 U.S. is paid. 6/2/08: the National Visa Center (NVC), Portsmouth, NH sends letter stating "We have received your payment for the Affidavit of Support Fee Bill" --the $70, and that the I-864 Affidavit of Support can now be completed and sent to them.

Since, family sponsorship $ has been already allocated in I-864s for other siblings and their children by the petitioning family in USA, I have been asked to co-sponsor GF with an I-864 Affidavit of Support.

Problem: GF is asking me for $400.00 for petitioner to pay USCIS to process I-864 when NVC gets it from them. Question: I find no mention on any government website of an additional fee to process the I-864 above and beyond the $70 fee already paid them. GF's family has yet to show me any communication from NVC mentioning a $400 fee. I do not know if the family is confusing some other fee with the I-864 or if some intermediary in USA is requiring them to pay a $400 fee for helping them deal with USCIS. I am not getting a straight answer from the family either by design or language/USCIS process naivete.

Anyone know if the $70 was the final fee associated with the I-864 alone, or is there additional directly related fees, and do such additional fees total $400???

Thank you

The $400 is the actual visa application fee that has to be sent in before she can send in the visa application (DS-230) itself,

I was in the same situation where my boyfriend's parents filed for him in 2000 years before I met him, and I was his co-sponsor and I paid the visa application fee because his parents had previously sponsored other family members.

Good luck and go ahead and help them as you are on the lucky end. If you had to filed for her you would have had to pay waaaay more than $400 in fees before she gets here. She is also going to incur more expenses before the visa interview also. She has to complete a medical exams and might even have to pay for vaccinations if her records are not available and if she needs additional shots.

You can also read the guides about family immigration and the steps one has to go through before the visa is granted.
