I-551 stamp without a valid (expires) passport

In most cases, your home country's Embassy in the United States is capable of extending or issuing a passport. My wife went to the Thailand Embassy in Washington DC and they stamped in a 3-year extension into her passport. When that is finished I expect they will issue her a new passport. We went in person because it is so close (and they stamped her passport right then) but they also accept passport applications by mail.

How long has your passport been expired? If not too long then you have a good chance at renewal by the Embassy.

Try to find the web site for your home country's Embassy in the United States. Hopefully they will have passport renewal information and the forms you can print out at home and complete.

So, the advice is to get your passport taken care of first, and then go to get the I-551 stamp. Be sure to ask for your old passport back. Even if they punch holes in it the documentation inside (like your visa) may be helpful in the future.

I never had to go this far as the USCIS accidentally sent in our green cards before the deadline date, but is my understanding without a valid current foreign passport, you make an inforpass appointment and bring in two passport photos of yourself and the make out a I-94 that may be good for however long your officer thinks you greencard will come in. Heard some were as short as 30 days, so the people had to go in again.

The I-751 still gives the impression you will get your card in 90 days, so make sure you apply 90 days before your card expires, that is a load of BS, send you a one year extension nobody understands, and that runs out so you are running around trying to figure out what to do, and they don't say anything or even send you another one year extension. And you can go nuts trying to find out this information on their site.

And why would your former country even want to renew your passport when they know you plan to stay here? Puts us in a very bad situation. They won't deport you ever, even with an expired card, but you can't work or travel, and with the I-864 can't get aid, so you can stay here and starve to death. Wonder what they are thinking?

INS said in 1986 with limited immigration, got like 2 million applications for marriage, another way to come here if you are not good a winning lotteries. But they weren't checking applications carefully and about 90% were phony, but they started background checks that cut that number down to less than 150,000 applicants with five years in prison for those immigrating for profit with that move. But that wasn't enough, in 1988 started the conditional residence for marriages less than two years. And of course the marriages would be less than two years, it's not like your intended spouse can hop on a plane and come over here, that takes well over a year just to get permission with all kinds of proof. The to learn their stay here is conditional only to have to go through the same thing again, crazy!

Tried doing a websearch to learn if the I-751 was actually catching bad guys, couldn't find anything, but wouldn't be bad if they sent you your permanent permanent resident cards in a reasonable length of time or even an extension that was long enough for them to fool around with you. Thank God, or whoever that is history for us, but was very frustrating.

As NickD said, you can get I-94 stamped with I-551. It is good to travel. You do need 2 photos for that. They do it (or did it) right away when you get infopass. My info is old. Check if something has changed for I-94.

Does anyone know what the procedure is to get an I-551 extension stamp for those who don't have a valid passport (expired)?
