Republicans have hammered Michelle Obama for her remarks in February that she was proud of America "for the first time in my adult life." Tonight, however, Dan Abrams showed footage he uncovered of a Fox News interview with John McCain on March 13, 2008, in which McCain said, "I didn't really love America until I was deprived of her company."

Abrams thinks McCain's comments could undermine the "right wing's steady attacks against Michelle Obama."

For fairness I think its a "non-issue" that should be exploited if the Republicans wish to continue pursuing non-issues as a campaign tactic.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

It took realizing just how good he had it by having it taken away for McCain to realize how much he loved America.

It took her husband doing well in the primaries for Mrs Obama to realize it.

Big difference.

Totally agree. It's only relevant to show that if that is the criteria by which some are measuring one's love for their country, then by logic, they'd have a real problem with John McCain. In other words, Michelle Obama's love for her country shouldn't be in question for what she had said any more than John McCain's based on what he said.

Right. Sean Hannity needs to shut the hell up about Michelle Obama's love for her country and find something that has substance.

I understand the difference. Unfortunately, both are non-issues when it comes to relevance and should be left out of tactical campaigning for an office. I'd say that patriotism is a given when running for the highest office in the land.

When the electorate has chosen sides based on issues it's things like this that change minds. Both play a major role in politics, like it or not.

Yes, and would you agree that it shouldn't be? Specially when its a candidate vs a candidate's wife? ;)

It's the spin machine motivated by selective outrage and hypocrisy that's the problem.

What we like does not matter. Reality is all that matters. Stuff like this effecting elections are reality.

As Steven hints... its selective outrage. No matter how many times comments are explained in the actual context, its what people want to see and believe that eventually wins. Some people want to see truth and reality while others... hmmm...

and 'we' are part of the electorate. People have criteria.

Candidates wives weren't that important until Hillary Clinton reared her head. Does Mrs. Obama have any political ambitious of her own?

In any case, if your wife chooses to make public statements that have politcal implications, expect they will fall under strutiny. Did Michelle ever explain her statement? If there was one I never heard it.

The Obamas' handlers are busy marketing them in a more palatable fashion.

The only political implications that her comments have had are those that the smear tacticians working on behalf of Senator McCain have tried to use. Its that simple. The difference is in whether or not you, as a member of the electorate, chooses to believe them in or out of context.

And yes, I do believe she did offer up an explanation, as with everything else that has been taken way out of line and way out of context by those seeking to avoid actual electoral issues.

Must be have been a weak pretty explanation because nobody remembered it.

LOL...or perhaps the spin machine doesn't compute information that contradicts it's agenda? Selective outrage at it's finest.

Michelle Obama explains pride remark

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Michelle Obama says she’s always been proud of her country, but for the first time she’s “seeing people rolling up their sleeves in a way that I haven’t seen.”

The wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was trying on Wednesday to clarify a remark about pride in the United States — or alleged lack of it — that she had made earlier this week.

She had told an audience in Milwaukee that, “For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change.”

A number of commentators jumped on the remark and Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, sought to capitalize on it, saying “I have, and always will be, proud of my country.”

When asked Wednesday if she would like to clarify her comment, Obama replied that she has been struck by the number of people going to rallies and watching debates, as well as record voter turnouts.

“What I was clearly talking about was that I’m proud in how Americans are engaging in the political process,” she said.

“For the first time in my lifetime, I’m seeing people rolling up their sleeves in a way that I haven’t seen and really trying to figure this out — and that’s the source of pride that I was talking about,” she added.

When asked if she had always been proud of her country, she replied “absolutely.” “Barack and I, our stories wouldn’t be possible, if it weren’t for fundamental belief and pride in this country and what it stands for.”

Her husband came to her defense. ‘‘Statements like this are made and people try to take it out of context and make a great big deal out of it, and that isn’t at all what she meant,’’ he said.

....

So I'm wondering if Cindy McCain would have the same criticism for what her own husband had said? Selective outrage strikes again...and gets bit on the ####### for it's blatant hypocrisy.
