VJers,

I need your guidance and help on this one because I am not getting anywhere. I will be getting married soon in Uttar Pradesh and I thought right after marriage I could register my marriage under Hindu Marriage Act.

But talking to registrar in the city they say you have to go to Delhi to do the registration and get permission from somewhere. The answers have been vague and not helpful. I don't understand why I have to go to Delhi. He did say that you have to register under Foreign Marriage Act.

1) What do I need to do to convince the registrar that he should register the marriage under Hindu Marriage Act? Can somebody point to the text where foreigners (I was Indian citizen and got Naturalized) are also covered under Hindu Marriage Act?

2) The second problem is my address is of US and they need my address verification. But, for them Electricity bill etc. is not enough to prove my address. What could I provide them to meet this condition?

I don't have much vacation and I want to register marriage within a week or so.

Thanks for your replies in advance.

I'd say you need to go to DC's office in your spouse's district and get some information about special marriage act, in documents you need your passport, your spouse's passport, his identity proof, resident proof, id proof of witness.

one more thing if you have completed your matric from india kindly take that as your birth cert.

it will take 30 days to solmnize the marriage, so i think you need to extend your vacation OR offer some money to concerned person, you may get it soon but the chances are little to get it early.

Thanks for your responses.

Roza,

What is DC office? If I am having a religious marriage, I shouldn't have to wait for 30 days. Here is the link from New delhi embassy and for religious ceremony, they don't say 30 day wait: http://newdelhi.usembassy.gov/acsmarr.html

Shouldn't the marriage be registered quickly then? Can the marriage be registered at the place of marriage even though it is not spouse's district?

pbgirl,

Did you have to wait 30 days to register your marriage and did you have to submit any documents from US consulate/authority?

silent,

The passport has address but written in pencil, since it can change. So I don't think that will be sufficient address proof.

Hope others can respond also.

Hi Yeye, my case is similar to yours and I am done with this process of registering my marriage . Once you have gone through naturalization you can't take up the route of Hindu Marriage act(even though you were a citizen of India earlier and do have a permanent address in India). Religious ceremony is no way related to the civil marriage or registered Marriage in this case. You will have to submit the application 30 days prior to the marriage and get it registered on any day after the 31st day. The address proof can be your driver's license in the U.S.

I admit I do not understand the Hindu Marriage act, and so please ignore this post if I am talking about the wrong thing or my understanding of the question is incorrect. But it just may be possible to register the marriage even after going through naturalization. I am a naturalized US citizen, got married in India in August of last year through Arya Samaj (we did not submit any application prior to marriage), and were able to register the marriage later that day. The marriage was registered and we received the memorandum of marriage within a week. I did not have a permanent address in India, so the marriage certificate lists my US address along with a temporary address in India. The procedure was handled by someone who understood all this, but no influence or bribe were used to complete the procedure. This was in Gujarat -- may be the law is different by state???

I know this does not really help with the original question. But if what I did is what the OP is trying to achieve, it might just be possible and may only require finding the right person with good knowledge of the procedures.

Thanks for your responses.
