Varying standards of beauty by culture

I came across a few posts that made me curious about this.

I've never gotten the impression, for Morocco at least, that what is considered "attractive" here in the U.S. for a woman is all that different than what is considered "attractive" there, in terms of height/weight/facial features, etc.

What do you think?

This isn't necessarily an MENA question...it could apply to all different cultures around the world.

A lot of Jamaican men tend to hit on the older, larger foreign women.....country of origin does not really matter. Not all. But a large percentage.

Is that because they find them more attractive, physically?

I don't fall into this category, so keep in mind, I am not speaking from my own personal experience.

Find them more physically attractive? I don't know. It does seem to be the preference, so I would assume so. I have heard guys say they would never date anyone they felt was too skinny. It is always beyond me. Just not what I am used to with US guys.

Thanks for answering, I find this interesting.

So what kind of women do you see as "models" on television and in magazines in Jamaica? I realize that women's and men's definitions can vary, but is there some sort of "Maxim" equivalent in Jamaica?

The only thing I've noticed (and much of this is from watching Moroccan TV most days) is that slightly fuller waistlines do appear to be a bit more acceptable in Morocco, even though I think the rates of obesity are higher here (have to verify that). This doesn't necessarily mean they're overweight or out of shape, though -- they just look a bit curvier to me than the "American" standard of thinness (for entertainers at least), which, in my opinion, leans to an extreme. I may have seen a diet commercial or two on 2M, but I'm not sure about that. Yesterday I watched a show with some plus-sized Amazigh dancers, and you wouldn't be as likely to see female dancers of that size on American TV. As for fitness, facial features, etc., I don't see much difference at all in the standards. Hubby's sister played sports in high school, and that seems to be the norm for young women. There are certainly many beautiful women there, and I believe they would be considered so in any culture. I guess I'd say the standards are very similar overall, but the culture may be a bit more accepting of those who deviate from the standard. But what do I know...

edited because I made a statement before checking the facts...

From what I have heard, men that live in 3rd world countries have an image of people with more financially as being larger in stature(I assume that is based on the ability to buy food).

My husband doesn't care for skinny women, but he is not into larger women either. Kind of middle ground. He also loves tall women. He told me how happy he was when he first saw me at the airport and I towered over all of the women. Not that I am that tall really, only about 5'8". He has for all of his life dreamed of marrying a blonde woman however. And he got that thanks to miss clairol.

I have also noticed that middle eastern men are into women with really big eyes and rounder faces.

It seems that the majority of American men prefer ultra thin tiny women. Do you guys notice that too?

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

The runway type models are pretty thin. The magazine models seem to be a little on the heavier size; but far from fat. When they advertise shows and things (which happen every night in nearly every community in JA), they tend to show the average women....all shapes and sizes. At parties, shows, clubs, I have seen many Jamaican women I would consider hefty, get lots and lots of attention. Could be the outfit squeezed into. Could be the gyrations. Could just be the preferences.

They tend to be more forgiving of things that would be considered "flaws" in the US. That much is true.

When I think of this- different standards of beauty by culture- I tend to think of certain cultural practices of piercing or branding to beautify the man or woman. Sometimes this is beautification is accomplished temporarily by make up (e.g. henna or the geisha)....but it always a bit on the extreme side for most of us.

But for most cultures, there is not a lot of difference in what is beautiful among us. Remember that study a few yeaers back that showed newborns tended to prefer (spent more time) gazing at beaituful faces?

I can't make any judgment about this issue without some sort of photographic comparison.

That's a good point. It has to do with symmetry, right?

I'm always hearing about this "Western" standard of beauty, which to me implies that there must be an Eastern standard of beauty as well. Maybe these notions are outdated with the ease of global communication nowadays.

I can't make any judgment about this issue without some sort of photographic comparison.

 Ok, I'll work on that.

Could be the gyrations.

LOL!

I'm not sure about that. I've noticed the trend moving in the other direction. It all started with J Lo, and now there's the Kim Kardashian type.

I was surprised actually by the number of overweight women in Morocco. It reminds me a bit of Italy though...the young girls are super skinny...the old ladies are, well, not so super skinny!

Oh, another thing....

Growing up, my Asian friends here in the U.S. seemed to feel a lot more pressure about their looks than others. I had one friend whose mother wanted her to get cosmetic surgery to give her eyelid creases.

I keep thinking about this scene from Michael Palin's Sahara where he attends this celebration in Niger. The men wear make-up that to my eyes looked cartoonish and they danced and moved using their eyes and bodies to be more attractive, but again to my eyes-- not so much so. This is an example of one of the men who is by the standards of the Wodaabee very attractive. In fact the make-up is meant to enhance his beauty.
