I decided to move down here and not let the government know I was leaving. I collected two months worth of gst and 4 months worth of child tax benefits. Not really thinking, honestly believing that I was still entitled based on the fact that I paid taxes the previous year.

I came on this site and read that you'd have to pay it back and I called and cut it off immediately. Thinking that I was oh so honest about the mishap...or should we call it: ignorance...I honestly believed maybe they would let me slip by. ;)

Well no. I owed 14,000 back to the government and I don't know how it got so high. But it did. And what was deposited into my account for my tax refund 35.00.

Well thats okay because at least the debt is taken care of.

So learn from me people...if you didn't know before and if you're ever inquiring...this is what happens and it kind of sucks.

Wow, thats a lot of money to owe them back just for a few months. What did they do, charge you 10 times the actual amount you did get?

I got the number off the GST/HSC site and the Child tax credit site and when you say you may owe them money they're pretty efficient in getting you to the right people ASAP.

I'm collecting EI..will they garnish that?

naw, that's different if you applied for it since you've moved to the US. What they are concerned about are benefits being paid to those who started them while living in Canada and no longer live there (GST/HST tax credit, child tax credit, etc.)

nope! I called r/t the GST/HST credit, I still got a couple of payments. Good thing I sat on the money, because I got a notice saying "pay this back in full ASAP". Be prepared!
