I love Ñало! The best Ñало is from Ukraine. I freeze it then slice it paper thin. Put it on a peice of real black bread topped with хрен, heaven! Unfortunately it is illegal in the US and trying to sneak it through customs results in a pack of airport dogs attacking the suitcase. :(

It's not illegal in the U.S., it's only illegal to import it without a proper USDA inspection.

You can buy it here. I know, .........it's not the same. While I don't miss salo, I miss a Korean delicacy called sam-geuop-sal...... sam means "three" and geuop-sal loosely translates to "layers of pork fat" so if you look closely (even the words sound the same) connect the dots, you get salo. But, it's not the same! Korean 3 layers of fat is much better than Eastern European pork fat. Either way, they're both better than plain old American pork fat. (Unless it's heavily salted and fried up with some grits!)

Let me think - I know Natasha made some jelly-filled sweet bread today but lamented that it didn't come out right, so we might be making more of that (it's for school on Friday, where Natasha volunteers in the library). Yesterday Natasha made chicken and rice, Russian style, which is one of her (and my!) favorites. We've got a hundred or so pelmini in the freezer from our pelmini making efforts 10 days or so ago, and that ALWAYS gets my vote if we're undecided as to menu on any particular night.

I've got a freezer full of pelmeni and vareneki too. But I'm too lazy to make it. I buy it in Hollywood. But after church last Sunday I stopped by the Russian stores and stocked up on black bread and beer. Big sale on Russian, Ukrainian and Latvian beers, so I bought them all! Too bad we don't have salla :(

Wow. Too lazy to make frozen pelmeni? Is that even possible?:lol:

Ooops! Speaking Russian has made me forget that English word order is not as flexible :hehe: But it is true that I have been too lazy to cook the stuff. I'd rather sleep by the pool with a cold beer..........

Oh I just meant that pelmeni has got to be the easiest dish in the world to make...assuming you've already assembled and frozen it of course. Remove from freezer, boil, eat. Heck, it's easier than Mac&Cheese! :)

We have few russian supermarkets here in brooklyn and now they sell hand made pelmeni by the pound. It's a little freezer and they have them there laying piece by piece and you just take as much as you want by the scoop. It's damn expensive but so damn goooooooooood :)

These cooking instructions are remarkably similar to those for an American classic - the hot dog! (Or 'sausage' as we call them now at my house)

I had my Ukranian friend over for dinner a few weeks ago and I said we were having kielbasa. She gave me the standard "you completely botched the pronunciation AGAIN" eye-roll, and said "kol-ba-SA." So I had to show her the package to prove that it really was "kielbasa," and that I hadn't just botched the Russian word for sausage. So she said, "ahhhh, it's Polish. But you didn't get the stress right still." Yeah yeah.

Now I'm hungry for gham-borgers...
