What if you died?

I hate thinking about things like this...well doesnt everyone. Before my husband left for Palestine last year, he mentioned something about him dying. I dont remember what brought the conversation on, but I could not deal with it then. I said "no habibi I dont awnt you to die!" He said "everyone dies you know. it is not in our hands. Whenever Allah wants us he takes us."

Sounds ominous. I hope he's not thinking of doing something stupid, like blowing himself up.

These types of comments are probably not what this community should be promoting. Maybe I am missing something but I believe we should be respectful of all cultures and be careful how things may be interpreted by others even if we did not mean to insult them.

I dont see a promotion. Reading things into a comment is rampid around here.

I would hazard a guess that his point was that the comment promotes certain stereotypical assumptions about people from the Palestinian Territories. The anecdote didn't offer much detail - and the poster says she doesn't remember exactly what the conversation was about, it could have been about anything at all. There's nothing to suggest that the guy was thinking or planning on "blowing himself up", that's just taking a broad stereotype of an Islamic extremist and applying it to an individual. It's not the most offensive thing I've ever read - but it does seem a little insulting.

Placing your own assumptions in the gray areas is foolish. Carry-on!

Mark's statement is clearly applying a general stereotype to an individual based on a vague comment and the knowledge of where the guy is from. That's not assumption - that's actually what's being said.

What's your reading of it then...? By way of a contrast?

How do you know what Marks stereo types are? Maybe he doesnt think like you!

You mean Palestinian + "I might die" = suicide bomber?

No, that isn't stereotypical at all is it.

With this horrible news about Dawn it got me thinking. Not only does her husband have to face the reality of her death, but will he have not only the assistance, but the money to plan her funeral. Will he be able to survive not just emotionally but financially without her?

The majority of the USC's are the wives, and more than likely will be the bread winner for some time to come. Have you thought about your husband should you die? Will he have have a place to live (that he can afford on his own). Do you have life insurance? Does he know what steps he needs to follow to collect it? The list could go on and on.

Any other thoughts on this? I do not want to leave my husband in this kind of situation should I die before my time.

is there a way to name a beneficiary not living in the U.S??? From this I have considered revising my Life and accidentail insurance but wasn't sure I could do that since he doesn't have a SS# ????

But you are right... things to think about. What happens if we were to pass prior to them getting permanent status??

Yes. My life insurance company said I can add anyone on as a beneficiary and it doesnt matter who, where they live, or if they have a SS # or not.

Thanks.. i'll have to get moving on this....
