This test is really one of my biggest Pet Peeves. What the heck do any of these questions really have to do with living in America today? Wouldn't it be much more beneficial to the country and to the citizen to be if the questions revolved more around things that show that they understand and can live and function in the US? The current laws. Some form of "If you needed (fill in blank) the steps you would follow would be (fill in the blank). Many current US citizens in the US could not pass this test, but yet are extremely functional citizens. Shouldn't that be the ultimate goal for an immigrant?

I guess we should stop teaching American History and government in our schools, then....

That's lame, did I say that? Would you give a history test in an English class? It really is simple....they need to survive here, will the fact that they know the US history help them if the need to figure out how to get a drivers license?

Personally, I am trying to have my wife learn as much as possible about us, including history. Warts and all so to speak. At the same time I am reading about Viet Nam and their culture.

Here is an excerpt from a recent chat.

Me: Thuy I want you to read about the Presidential Candidates so we can talk about them.

Thuy: Honey, please no!

You said those things have nothing to do with living in America today and noted that many US citizens couldn't pass the test. Why, then, should we bother teaching those things?

If all they're interested in is basic survival issues, then why become a citizen at all?

So knowing that the flag has 13 stripes is vital to living? Knowing that isn't going to put bread on my table tonight, is it going to on yours? Give me a break. History is important, but not all important for survival. It would be great to take classes, knowledge is power, but as a requirement for citizenship is rediculous. How many people really honestly know how many congressmen there are in the US? Will that knowledge pay the power bill?

The citizenship test is about becoming a citizen, not about survival.

You can learn the things that are vital to living and put bread on your table as a permanent resident.

No, it doesn't put food on the table, it isn't important for survival. But that is just my point. If all you are interested in is what you need to survive, then why bother with history at all? Why become a citizen? You don't have to be a citizen to survive in this country.

So in your opinion, if a current US citizen doesn't pass the test should they leave the country? Personally I want immigrants here there are capable of taking care of themselves. Thank God for the immigrant that can tell me the name of the national anthem, but can't figure out to fill out a basic form.
