temp EAD at POE confusion

So we asked for the temporary work stamp at the POE (which was the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, land crossing). The officer said he would give it to us but we both felt that he didn't necessarily understand what we were asking for. So we let him finish processing the visa, then took a look at my SO's passport and I-94. We didn't see anything about work, so we asked the officer again, "Does this mean he can work right away?" and he said "Yes."

The I-94 has a Departure Number, some numbers and dates, the border stamp that you usually see in your passport, and some other rather normal looking info. Nothing was filled in on the back of the card. It doesn't say anything about employment and we weren't given anything else. The K visa inside the passport was stamped with the usual customs dated stamp. So.... I'm confused. Did we get the temp EAD? Did we not, and the border guard just told us he could work, but didn't really give it to us?

If it was given it is put on the I-94 and not in the passport.

If you don't see a stamp on the back of the I-94 that says "Employment Authorized until:", then you didn't get it. Sorry.
