A Rand man is in the hospital after suffering several injuries, mostly self inflicted, during an attempted convenience store robbery in which he smashed through the front glass door, tried to steal a police car, all while being Tasered and attacked by a police canine.

Charleston Police Sgt. Aaron James put out a news release detailing the incident today.

Beginning about 5:50 a.m. Monday, Charleston police were dispatched to the 800 block of Oakwood Road after a bus driver claimed to have been assaulted, according to the press release.

About the same time, Metro 911 dispatched more officers to the 7-Eleven at 288 Oakwood Road in reference to an attempted robbery, the release said.

According to the release, Gerald Martin Maxwell, 21, of Rand had committed both crimes.

Maxwell first flagged down a bus and told the driver that he had been assaulted and kidnapped, the release said.

The bus driver radioed for help.

Maxwell then became agitated and began yelling, throwing things and verbally abusing the driver, the release said.

When Maxwell eventually left the inside of the bus he climbed on the front end and punched it several times, the release said.

When he walked away toward the 7-Eleven, the bus driver noticed he dropped a knife, which was later confiscated by police, the release said.

When Maxwell arrived at the store, he ran inside bleeding and yelling, the release said.

He then went behind the counter and tried unsuccessfully to drag the clerk into the back room, the release said.

The other clerk then called 911.

Next, Maxwell tried to open the cash register, but was unable, the release said.

He then left the store and walked across the street, only to immediately return, according to the release.

When the first officer arrived on the scene, Maxwell was standing in front of the counter.

The officer ordered him to the ground at gunpoint with a canine ready, but Maxwell refused, began yelling and took off all of his clothes, the release said.

The officer tried to gain control, using everything at his disposal, even the canine, but Maxwell could not be controlled, the release said.

Another officer then arrived on the scene and used his Taser on Maxwell twice, the release said.

Maxwell broke away both times and ran out of the store, where he attempted to steal a police cruiser, the release said.

The officers managed to get him away from the vehicle with help from the canine, but Maxwell managed to get away again and ran straight through the front glass door of the store, the release said.

A third officer arrived shortly after and used a Taser on Maxwell, the release said.

After cycling the current on the Taser several times, the officers were able to place cuffs on Maxwell and secure him until medics arrived, the release said.

Maxwell was sedated due to his continued erratic behavior and was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital, where he is currently under evaluation, the release said.

He suffered several injuries due to his behavior, but still is in stable condition.

Maxwell is charged with assault and battery, battery on a police officer, first-degree robbery, destruction of property, disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice and grand larceny.
