My wife and I are now married - yay!! Now we're working on the next round of paperwork and have run into a problem with the Social Security office. She went to the office with her passport/visa, social security card, and her wedding certificate to have her legal name changed but the officer has told her she cannot change her social security card because she "needs to show her U.S citizenship or lawful alien status" and that they need to see a K-3  visa in order to issue SSN card in desired married name. Has anyone else had this problem???

I want to file the AOS paperwork ASAP but I'm afraid to if her name isn't legally changed yet because I assume all of the paperwork should be in her new name.

Thanks in advance!

This is not a problem, file for AOS using married name, and on the lines stating other names used OR name on I-94 you put maiden name.

You can later get the SSN card corrected when you have EAD or Green-card showing maiden name.

You were dealing with a typical SSA MORON if they wanted to see a K-3.

OK, I'll go for that but I was just trying to follow the recommendation on Visa Journey. The other thing is that we are not doing a typical married last name, it will be a combination of both (with a hyphen) and I wanted to make sure that was okay. But from my research, it should be alright. Thanks for the advice!

Just to piggyback on this topic...

I am going to change my name/ssn the day after we get married. When I fill out the paperwork for AOS (I am the USC), how do I list my recently changed name?

Thanks!

Strange, when Natasha and I went to the SS office to get her name changed, they looked up the rules on the computer and we were in and out in 5 minutes. Sorry to hear you had problems with this simple process, but YuAndDan has it right - gov't idiots.
