I realize that compounds difficulties because you have 2 immigrants instead of one.

But then, USA is looking like a total non option anymore. Spouses are just not allowed.

We have the worst policies I reckon of any country in the world when it comes to foreign spouses.

Its the worst policies if you do everything by the book, but you could do it the "other" way

Here is my story. I've lived problem free life, payed my taxes. One day I decided to marry this girl. But to do so would require her to come to US of A, and so it started. My problem free live turned in to free problems from USCIS! Sure things turned to unsure, certain dates turned to aproximation within months. All logical thinking was out the door, as I filed my papers withing famous Vermont Centre!

Not doing it by the book means always being afraid of being caught, not being able to work legally, and if you are caught, being deported and banned.

By comparison, a third nation option sounds much better.

Can we pool our resources and buy an island for immigration refugees?

I can afford to chip in for about 10 grains of sand on that island.

As far as going the 'other way' I have been there done that. Canadian immigration for me was a complete bust. I spent almost 2 years stuck in the Canadian system with my husband sponsoring me and now, I am 8 months into the U.S. system sponsoring my husband. I think any immigration in any country for anyone is horrendous.

My friend who is Indian citizen got married to an Indian Malaysian, her husband started petition for her PR 5 years after the marriage (yes, that's the law, after 5 years of marriage only qualified to file petition) and the paperwork stayed in the black holes for the past 7-8 years. They were called for interviews twice, they attended the interview with three children from 5-11 years old, finally the petition was approved last year, and she is still waiting for the ID card to mail to her after one year! The rate it goes, it will probably take another century for her to get citizenship.

In my friend's case, she gets a work authorization based on her own qualification, not her marriage, as she has a PhD in Engineering, even then, it's limited in what kind of jobs she can get. Thousands others couldn't even work until they get their PRs, they live here with "visitor visa" that requires renewal every 1-12 months, depends on the mercy of the immigration officer who grants the extension.

It's an open secret that immigration in my country is plagued with corruptions, illegals can get PR through the back doors and people who do it legally are being turned away or being kept in the dark for years. But, people around us couldn't believe US the A has the same problem. We know a British and Malaysian couple who decided to live in Australia. It took them about 2 months to get the PR and eventually moved there. They couldn't understand why it took so long for a US citizen to bring his wife home!
