US soldier refuses to report for active duty in Iraq

I'd love to see about his active duty record. Someone gutsy enough to go public with his insubordination should hypothetically have been gutsy enough to have been a brave soldier, much akin to his fellow comrades, I suppose.

Calling him Candywhatever is skirting some of the larger issues but if it makes one feel more like a macho man then go for it.

Technically I do agree... all military personnel should have a firm understanding of the obligations leading up to an 8 year contract- active duty or not. Nevertheless, given some of the more flamboyant "ex-military" types that frequent, for example, VJ, I'd not find myself all that surprised if reading comprehension wasn't a forte for some of the less conscientious objectors.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Sure he does... It's his life isn't it?

No, it isn't. Every soldier has a life, too and SGT Candyass isn't special because he did a few tours of duty. So have a lot of others. You can't just walk away because you're tired of it or your family misses you. There are plenty more soldiers who've had it worse than him and managed to make it. Makes me wonder how the other soldiers in his unit feel for taking up his slack as a whiner and publicly hound when no one will ask them about their opinion. Once soldiers decide which lawful orders they want to obey, morale crumbles and it can become a rout if the enemy knows it.

As I said before, there wouldn't be such a strain on the military if some other folks had enlisted. No mention of it by anyone.

Actually, the answer to this is worse than you probably thought.

Draft-dodgers in 1960's were welcomed into Canada by its Justice Minister (1963-1968)/Prime Minister (1968-1979, 1980-1984)--who himself dodged Canadian draft (through bribery) in 1939 (which is what led some soldiers to seek asylum there RECENTLY after going AWOL).

Guts enough to get all the attention he'll ever need from an adoring media. Ever heard of these guys?:

MURPHY, MICHAEL P

DUNHAM, JASON L.

McGINNIS, ROSS A.

MONSOOR, MICHAEL, A.

SMITH, PAUL R.

Probably not but they deserved a lot more attention than Chiroux will get.

Calling him Candywhatever is skirting some of the larger issues but if it makes one feel more like a macho man then go for it.

Tell us when you figure that what the larger issues are.

Nevertheless, given some of the more flamboyant "ex-military" types that frequent, for example, VJ, I'd not find myself all that surprised if reading comprehension wasn't a forte for some of the less conscientious objectors.

Translation= If you are military veteran, you must be illiterate because you signed up (no doubt with a "X"). The smart guys are the conscientious objectors. That could be Obama's next campaign theme: I smart enough to avoid becoming a POW unlike my opponent, Senator McCain.

Yes, I actually met ensign Murphy back in 2001. A couple of years before dying in a ridiculously waged war.

How's the initiation of the Iraq war for starters?

Nevertheless, given some of the more flamboyant "ex-military" types that frequent, for example, VJ, I'd not find myself all that surprised if reading comprehension wasn't a forte for some of the less conscientious objectors.

If that is your translation, perhaps you feel more alluded to than I even thought of mentioning. Unfortunately for your lack of translation skills, that is not what I wrote, is it? I italicize it for your benefit.

Nevertheless, given some of the more flamboyant "ex-military" types that frequent, for example, VJ, I'd not find myself all that surprised if reading comprehension wasn't a forte for some of the less conscientious objectors.

is that your scientific expert opinion?

;) Maybe. Do note the " " marks...

i'll take that to mean those who served but didn't retire, as retirees are not ex military - they are on retainer pay and thus still part of the military and subject to recall in the future, even decades later.

No, I was being a little more straightforward, Charles. Then again there is also the "marks" to denote a little more BS than what is actually being stated... you know... like the "Ex-SEAL" brag from certain folks we meet in life.

Not really this " " :

dr.evil.laser.jpg

I think he meant guys who were never in the military but play the character on VJ.

Kinda like message board Rambos.

Yay!

What if he had signed up for 8 years and after the fact he was ordered by his commanding officers to smuggle drugs? I guess he made the commitment, he should shut up and do as duty calls whether or not it is illegal is of little consequence.

He views the war as illegal, as do many US citizens. This has nothing to do with wanting to sit at home, he has principles and opposes the war.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'
