Hi there! I recently became a US Citizen. I know that Philippines is one of the countries that allows their citizens to hold dual citizenship. I was wondering if I need to do anything special like apply for Dual Citizenship or call the nearest Philippine Consulate? Any help will be greatly appreaciated.

Thanks,

Ann

I do not know how it exactly works for the Philipines, but in for example germans are allowed to have a dual citizenship as well.

For that we do have to apply for a permission to keep our german citizenship with the german embassy first BEFORE applying for the US Citizenship. If they approve they provide us a certificate that proofs that we can keep the german citizenship. If we apply for the US Citizenship without this approval certificate, we will automatically loose our german citizenship.

As I said not sure if this works the same way for you.

Thanks to those who have replied! I am still not sure if I have lost my Filipino citizenship or retained it as the Act RA 9225 is a little confusing. The Act was implimented in 2003 and I didn't leave the Philippines until 2004 and just became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2008...did I lose my Filipino citizenship by doing this and need to re-apply for it or did I retain it and now have dual citizenship?

I quote:

"How is Filipino citizenship lost?

The more common ways by which Philippine citizenship may be lost are:

1. By naturalization in a foreign country;

2. By express renunciation of citizenship;

3. By subscribing to an oath of allegiance to support the Constitution of a foreign country, and

4. By cancellation of a certificate of naturalization as a Filipino citizen.

I am a Filipino who was naturalized as an American citizen. Do I have dual citizenship?

No, you do not have dual citizenship. You lost your Filipino citizenship when you became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Also, because you do not have dual citizenship, you cannot file a Petition for Recognition mentioned in Question 5."

Moreover, from another link:

Scroll down a bit to "how does one re-acquire Fil citizenship?"

With the passage of R.A. 9225, what happens to a natural-born Filipino who becomes naturalized in another country?

A natural born Filipino who becomes a naturalized citizen of another country is deemed not to have lost his/her citizenship under the provisions of the said law.

How does one re-acquire Filipino citizenship?

A natural-born Filipino who lost his/her Filipino citizenship through naturalization in another country may re-acquire Filipino citizenship through the following process:

"

From the looks of it, you have to re-acquire your Philippine citizenship. It would be best to contact your Phil. consulate near you.

go to the Philippine Embassy web site in Washington D. C.

www.philippineembassy-usa.org/home.htm

click on download forms

click on Reacquisition

print out the two page form and follow instructions

any questions phone the Embassy. You will discover a government office that is friendly and helpful. They helped us a Filipina/American couple, file for dual citizenship for our two sons born in America, they amended my wife's passport, they registered both our sons' birth with the Philippine government and recorded our American marriage with the Philippine government.
