I had to ask one of my colleagues just what it means. According to him, it's a description that a man would use to identify his relationship with the mother of his children...."She's my baby's mama," to state that he has no emotional or physical connection to her beyond the child.

Where I live (Bronx NY) almost everyone uses this term. It doesn't imply a lack of emotional or physical connection. It does imply, as Jenn suggests, that they are not married and may or may not be romantically involved. A lot of people have on and off relationships with their baby mamas/daddies, and often have very affectionate and close relationships with them (though sometimes it does imply nothing more than a sperm donor).

Anyway, I would say in my expert Bronx opinion that it's inappropriate to apply this term to a committed, long-term couple.

Which begs the question of what portrayal Fox News is even working with here: are the Obamas supposed to be some ghetto family with questionable family values or a bunch of latte-drinking Ivy-educated elitists out of touch with "the common man"? I can't figure it out!

Baby Daddy really implies that you're not married (and never were) to the father of the baby. It's just not applicable in any way to the Obamas, whether she said it, or the media used it to refer to her.

People though do take terms that might have originally meant one thing and deliberately use it as a form of sarcasm. I would venture to say that when Michelle said it, she wasn't dissing her relationship to her husband. Slang works that way.

I'm sure she wasn't dissing her relationship. But as a first lady prospect, one would think that she would have more foresight into the ramifications of using that phrase. I understand that her use was sarcastic, but that sarcasm was either an implied diss against people who *do* use that phrase, or else it was a clever way of asserting that they were different than the typical demographic that would use that phrase. In either case, it shouldn't be surprising that it was turned against them.

I think a lot of barriers have been broken and what used to bring controversy (a candidate who once smoked pot for example) now hardly causes anyone to blink. From the times I've seen Michelle Obama speak, I think she's incredibly articulate and very charming, much like her husband. I would imagine that for some people, the idea of an outspoken First Lady still brings controversy...it seems that many are hanging on to everything she says in hoping to catch her putting her foot in her mouth (it's done with the candidates themselves), but curiously, McCain's wife, like Laura Bush, doesn't seem to have too many microphones pushed in front of her. Like Hillary Clinton was as First Lady, Michelle Obama will not be the kind of First Lady who stands by her man and just waves. Hopefully after a few First Lady's that aren't just window dressing, people won't get so squeamish when a presidential candidate's wife actually opens her mouth.
