Ok guys.. I'm beyond frustrated here. Kris and I went down to the SSN office to get his number applied for. Well needless to say I wanted to smack the lady. We had tried the prior Friday and he wasn't in the system. Ok fine. We waited a week. Went in today and the lady said we couldn't apply beceause we were married now. WHAT?! She said his K1 visa and I-94 were no longer valid and he was no longer in k1 visa status. She told us we have to wait till his status is adjusted by USCIS. Ok, i'm beyond confused. She wouldn't listen to anything we said and just said we were SOL.

Ok.. someone please help me out here becuase I know this can't be right.

Did you read the guide already? http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssn

Be sure to print this , part C is relevant to K1. https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx...33;opendocument

Looking at your timeline it seems as though his I-94 should still be valid. I would go back to the office and try again. If you get the same lady or someone else denies him, ask for a supervisor. If that doesn't work, try another office. I know its inconvenient and unfair.

We printed out the document she wouldn't even look at it. His i-94 is valid for a very long time still. We may try another office because the last one just isn't worth dealing with. We did read the faq and did ask for the sup and were told she isn't in till next week.

Try going to another office and this time, don't mention being married. Some offices will really deny the application if the applicant came here to US under K1 and then applied for SSN after getting married. They will tell you that the applicant should have filed prior to getting married. There are offices too that will let you apply for SSN despite coming over under K1 and getting married prior to application.

If you will end up applying for SSN without mentioning the marriage, you will have to come back to have the name changed some time in the future.

Good luck!

Well we went to the office in the main city this time (we live near the capital) and had no issues. The guy never asked any questions just took the I-94 and passport and that was it. I still say the lady was an idiot and doesn't understand the whole process. I think steering clear of smaller satellite offices is the best bet to be honest. as for name change.. um.. kris is the one needing the SSN and his name will never change LOL

Hello guys

I got a couples Doubts reading your post. I thought that you had to get the SSN before getting married because you will need it for getting the married certificated, so, how did you get the marriage certificated? Also, where in texas did you try to apply for SSN. Thank you and good luck!

In the state of Texas they ask that you have a SSN but if you don't so long as you can provide the passport for the fiance(e) then that is fine. We first tried Georgetown.. (Big no no) then went to Austin and got it no problems.
