all I can think is that's a lot of money to spend to do something you could do with a hula hoop from the dollar store

heck, forget the dollar store, you could do that shaking and wiggling for free in the bedroom.

Absolutely true. :D

But two things to consider:

1. The Nintendo Wii is being played by more than adults. Lots of kids and teenagers have it too and even though we can "shake and wiggle" as much as we'd like in the bedroom with our significant others, we'd probably rather that children wait until they're a little older. Given the choice, I'd rather my son or daughter play a video game -- especially a physically active one like Wii Fit -- over having sex.

2. While hula-hoops are far less expensive than the Wii and its games, some people just aren't that atheletic. They're simply better at less "sporty" activities, some of which include video games. I know that neither my wife or I were ever successful at getting a hula-hoop to work right for us. So if we could use a hula-hoop in Wii Fit and exercise a little through it, we'd get more out of that. Besides, as someone else said, there's more to Wii Fit than mere hula-hoops and the Wii's gaming library offers a wide selection of entertainment.

does the scale thing that it comes with really tell you that you're fat? someone was talking about that the other day, maybe it was Neil. hmmm...anyways I think it should tell you your weight but shouldn't say something like you're fat. that might get someone to not do it.

Yes, it tells you if you have normal weight or if you're underweight, overweight or obese. It even shows your Mii (your Wii character) as fat/chubby/slim. It's actually very cute.

It says my husband is obese. Hubby grumbles but he sees it as a challenge to get his weight down. He is looking forward to the day when Wii will stop calling him obese

I wouldn't put too much faith into how it gauges obesity or weight in general. Nintendo's Wii Fit probably uses the BMI scale to judge this, but that can be very inaccurate and even health experts have agreed on that as well. The problem with the BMI scale is that it looks at body mass, while neglecting what makes up that body mass.

In other words, someone who is 5'6" and weighs 195 lbs would be considered obese, regardless of whether or not that weight came from muscle or fat. So someone who was extremely muscular by working out a lot and someone who was quite rotund, choosing to sit on the couch all day eating chips while watching TV would be gauged the same by the BMI scale if they had the same height and same weight.

Obviously, that's a huge error. One person in that comparison would be far healthier than the other, but you'd never know it if you went only by the BMI scale. I'd have to imagine Wii Fit uses a similar, if not exactly the same, system since the game couldn't look at each person as an individual (even if Nintendo had wanted that, the game doesn't come with a camera). The best advice then is to take Wii Fit's weight gauge with a grain of salt and just enjoy the game and whatever weight loss/management you achieve.

I smell 2 (at least) rats!

'Wii Fit Girl' not a marketing ploy for Nintendo

Titled "Why every guy should buy their girlfriend a Wii Fit," the YouTube clip shows 25-year-old Lauren Bernat hula hooping in time with the fitness video game in her T-shirt and underwear. The video has been viewed more than 2.4 million times and was suspected to be a viral marketing ploy for Nintendo's Wii Fit.

The speculation emerged after learning that both Lauren Bernat and Giovanny Gutierrez, who filmed the footage, work in advertising. Gutierrez works as the director of Interactive Media for Tinsley Advertising in Miami, Florida. Bernat works as an account executive at the same company, where her duties include evaluating the responses to the company's Internet advertising.

Nintendo has denied that the footage is part of an advertising campaign. "This has, and is, absolutely 100 percent, nothing to do with Nintendo," a spokesman said. "Nintendo did not create it and was not aware of it until it was brought to our attention."

Gutierrez has also denied that it was a viral advertisement for the Wii Fit. Gutierrez says he filmed Bernat to show the world how attractive his girlfriend is. "My girlfriend loves Wii Fit and looks hot doing it."

Bernat says she was unaware she was being filmed by her boyfriend on his mobile phone and was extremely upset with him at first, but is now reveling in her 15 minutes of fame as the "Wii Fit Girl," adding she would have made herself more attractive if she had known about the camera.

The game--which incorporates yoga, balance, strength training, and aerobics--hardly needs the free publicity. Even Amazon has a purchase limit policy in place for the Wii Fit because of the shortages across the U.S. Now does that sound like Nintendo is hurting for some sales?

The YouTube video has done much to boost the profile of Gutierrez, Bernat, and the ad agency where they work, so it looks as if everybody wins regardless.
