I think that kind of 'classification' does more to divide the nation than any one other single thing. Politics should not be about dividing voters into these subgroups because people don't neatly fit into these niches - anyone who thinks so is far too interested in the stereotypes and not enough interested in what individuals want/think. I honestly don't think it does society any favours. However, it does explain why people even on VJ can't distinguish between my voice and their percieved voice of me as some English tree hugging liberal, (just as a quick example of where these labels lead).

Talk about labelling gone absolutely crazy. I really see no reason to band voters as black, hispanic, young, old, male, and whatever else people come up with. Voters should be voters and if people don't stop with the labels and the stereotypes and the hysteria, the US will really not move very far forward.

This ain't about labels. It's about ethnic groups -as they see and identify themselves or as they fall within certain criteria along the lines of age, income, education, gender, etc - and voting patterns within those groups. Why is that a problem?

And how they, as voters, perceive the institutions of government working with or against them and other 'sectors' of a population already segregated along those same lines.

Well, if you guys can't even see the problem with not only accepting these artificially created 'lines' but promoting and embedding them, well I shake my head in disbelief, truly, I find this disturbing.

I can see why marketing people want us to believe this nonsense. I can see why politicians find it convenient to base certain electoral actions based on this nonsense but I find it surprising that ordinary people with no axe to grind are content to think in this bizarre way.

It is possible that I am misinterpreting what you are presenting I guess.

I think that you are merely thinking a little more progressively, PH. In what and where things should be sociopolitically in this country. Nevertheless, there is a very certain pattern of historical and current sociopolitical behavior on the part of Washington as well as the political base (communities) that place the power structures in their place.

All about deserving our elected officials, in a way.

I'd love to hear how... the one example most of us here can probably relate to is getting bogged down in delays thanks to the sudden rush of petitions and adjustment applications after last summers fee increases. Hardly to do with illegals or with ilegales...

If you looked at the Visa Bulletin (which has long delays for family members of GC holders since 1986--when Reagan scamnestied about 20 lakh illegals), you wouldn't be asking!

Pollsters need to stop referring to Hispanics/Latinos as if we were some homogenous group. We are not. The reason that Hispanics in Florida vote differently than Hispanics in NY, for example, is because we come from different countries and have different political priorities. The majority of Hispanics in Florida, for example, are Cubans and Cuban-Americans who lean Republican.

I have heard that. I have a friend from Bolivia who my dad asked which group (Hispanics/Latinos) he thought was representative of him. I forget his answer (Latino?), but remember that he said neither side likes to be called the other.

I'll have to google it to find out what geographic areas represent which group.

plus those cubans think they still live in the 60's. they whack!!

but yea.. politicians are trying too hard to homogenize latinos.. if a pollster goes to cuba, of course they're gonna get a 80% of latinos dont' think an amnesty is a good idea.. but if they go to other places, it's gonna be different.. muy diferente

plus technically, latino is the wrong term.. we don't speak latin.. we speak a romance language.. so the proper term is romantics
