Pray. The devil will knock you right out.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

No matter how hard it is to wake up, I still get up at my normal time. Usually my insomnia happens when I have a big dilemma on my hands -- once I deal with it, I get sleep. :) I've been exercising a lot more lately, and that has helped to get me sleepy at a decent hour.

Sorry to hear that you can't sleep. I go through phases like that when my Mom's cancer situation worsens and I feel helpless.

Have a warm milk with honey or a hot chocolate with a sip  of rum before you go to bed. That really helps me.

Also, when my head starts spinning and I can't settle my thoughts, I tell myself the same sentence over and over again (just to myself, not out loud). Something like "My body takes the sleep it needs" or "I am going to fall asleep and be well rested tomorrow". It sounds a bit mental, but does the trick. :P

Yeah, I know  The trick is that you keep your mind occupied with something else, so you don't think of stuff that might keep you awake. You could also say - I like bewbies or something like that  It's basically like counting sheep. Baaaaa!!

The trick with insomnia is that it's not really a problem itself; it's actually a symptom of a larger issue. That doesn't mean you're sick or anything, it could just be stress or something relatively simple. Lots of "everyday" things cause insomnia -- some people are just more prone to it than others.

Some things you can try to get rid of the problem are...

1. Find out what's causing it (i.e. stress is usually a major contributer).

2. Before going to bed, make sure to "unwind" by staying away from stimulating material, such as television shows/movies or the computer.

3. Make an effort to "hit the hay" when you're acually tired, instead of "when you're supposed to do so."

4. Don't eat or drink anything with stimulating properties before bed, such as caffeine.

5. If all else fails, resort to trying medication, but if you do this, make sure to be very choosy and remember that you'll need a good seven to eight hours of sleep when taking anything like this or you'll wake up very groggy.

There are no "wonder drugs" or "super cures" for this, despite whatever folk remedies many will probably tell you about. Such "snake oil" attempts only work if people believe they do, so it's not a case of the drug or food actually doing a whole lot, but one of "mind over matter."

I take Unisom, it's over the counter, not strong and helps me sleep. I do that cuz I have terrible insomnia and I really need my sleep or i'll just go crazy. But if you don't do meds, the only thing that I can think of is to read a book in bed, because that takes my mind off whatever worries I have and eventually I fall asleep.

Stick to a consistent sleep routine. Try going to bed at the same time each night and getting up at the same time each day.

If you are unable to get to sleep at night but regularly take a daytime nap, eliminate the daytime nap for a week or two to see if that helps you fall asleep easier at night.

The old notion of counting sheep may actually work. Try counting sheep or visualize your self walking around your home straightening all the pictures on the wall or some other boring repetitive task..Repetition is boring, unstimulating and may help you to doze off.
