Kathryn41, you have legal status in the US so the whole 'illegal' thing doesn't apply to you. It's those of us who don't have legal status yet who can't drive US cars into Canada. Tried to google the official info but couldn't find it...sorry! It's a Canada Customs regulation.

Neiks, the Customs Border gal explained the rationale for me last year. I'm too chicken to tempt fate.

Yes Neiks (who works for the Cdn Border dudes) has mentioned that a few times on here. And she admitted that some Border dudes do not know the law,thus some do get through, but are not suppose to!! And there was 1 Cdn gal that was going to drive her husbands US car to Canada alone, NOPE, Cdn border dudes wont not allow it!

Hi Yomtl,

We will be doing what you are going to do. I'm currently in the USA and am hoping for AP by October so I can attend a wedding in Vancouver. Below is my plan for moving my belongings in October (subject to change of course; nothing is booked).

My hubby and I will fly into Vancouver on a Thursday. A compact vehicle will be rented and hotel booked. We'll attend the wedding, meet up with friends and family, buy Smarties and ketchup chips, then Monday bright and early, drive to Bellingham, USA to pick up our one ton truck, drive it back to Vancouver where I have a 10x10 storage unit I've been paying for since 2004. Load up the truck (should be done before 3 PM), return the initial rental car, then head BACK over the border.

It will be a 12-16 hour drive back to SF, and I reckon we'll be pulling into a truck stop or two to rest. I've been warned that you have to be careful and keep watch on your rental vans because criminals target them in parking lots.

It seems like a lot of driving and work to me, but when I compared the price, I could save half on renting a truck in the USA versus U-pack or renting it in Canada. But then again, the difference is under $1000 and I'm still not sure if all the time wasted and stress is worth the $1000.

But Yomtl, I just wanted to let you know that we're also considering doing it, it could make for a good road trip. But our situ is a bit different because I will have been living here for a few months already. My hubby has everything already so I didn't need to bring anything down. That could be a consideration for you if you want to wait before moving all your stuff.

On my earlier statement of having taken a DTW-based rental while holding an AB licence: at the time I was working in Atlanta as a TN-1 (so, had legal US status--albeit, a lousy one).

(admittedly, the lady at Windsor border didn't even look at my passport to verify this--though her US counterpart did when I drove back to Detroit two days later)

Well I picked up our truck today in Niagara.

My friend who came with me almost lost her passport (!) on the train, but luckily it was found and we didn't have any other mishaps. Drove it back up to Toronto without any traffic, so it's sitting here waiting to get loaded tomorrow.

It took a good hunk of my day, but really wasn't that bad (actually I was back before 4). Should save us about $300, so I'm happy I went with this route.
