In an interview [McCain] gave to the Weekly Standard’s Stephen Hayes in 2006 for Hayes’ biography, “Cheney: The Untold Story of America's Most Powerful and Controversial Vice President,” McCain said: “I will strongly assert to you that he has been of enormous help to this president of the United States.”

Going further, McCain even told Hayes in comments heretofore unpublished that he’d consider Cheney for an administration post.

Asked whether he’d be interested in Cheney had the vice president not already have served under Bush for two terms, McCain said: “I don’t know if I would want him as vice president. He and I have the same strengths. But to serve in other capacities? Hell, yeah.

At a July 15 appearance in Michigan, McCain [called] Cheney "one of the most capable, experienced, intelligent and steady vice presidents this country has ever had."

Cheney "one of the most capable, experienced, intelligent and steady vice presidents this country has ever had."

If he picks someone like Cheney for VP, he's going to lose the election.

The fact that he calls Cheney "one of the most capable, experienced, intelligent and steady vice presidents this country has ever had" makes me wonder about Old Man McCain's judgement

I heard McCain on NPR a while back - at some outdoor rally - asking George Bush to canvass for votes on his behalf in November. I do think that's problematic for him potentially - if the Democrats exploit it. It would seem to suggest that McCain is somewhat out of touch with the public mood regarding the current administration if he's conspiciously not drawing a line between himself and Bush et al. Whether accusations of McSame are fair or not - it would seem to convey that impression.

The Democrats have done some damage to themselves with the long, and very bitter nomination process - but they still have an advantage. The Bush Effect would be a negative for McCain anyway simply because he's the candidate for the incumbent party, I can't imagine that publicly allying himself with Bush (who is now pretty poorly regarded even among his own party) will do him any favours.

In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c u n t." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day.

I am not the one plastering the board with threads that offer little more than drivel against a candidate. That's Gary's terrain.
