Republicans Blame Democrats for 'A Nation of $4 Gasoline'

Destroying more of our environment for a quick fix of more oil is just a band-aid. We need to stop plundering our natural resources and think long-term. The only way to force the kind of change we need to stop relying on a fuel source that is limited and non-renewable is to do exactly what Republicans love: allow the market to take care of it. People who don't want to spend all their money on gas will vote with their wallets and buy more economic cars. Car companies will stop making Hummers and start working on innovative new technologies that will attract consumers. And how about another Republican favorite: tax cuts! But these would be tax cuts for companies investing in science and technology to explore renewable sources of energy.

But here's the vital side that has to come from the Democrats: Invest money in public transportation. There's no getting around this; the free market won't take care of it for us, and it's the right thing to do. Require car makers to improve their MPG ratings (though perhaps the market drive for more economical cars will make this less important).

Big companies had their tax cuts before but I havent seen them investing in new technologies, tax cuts should go only on money used for investment not for profit sharing. Managers here give them self 400 times more money then ones in Europe. Pure greed.

I agree about public transportation. There was an issue about puting the Washington metro all the way to the Airport, federal goverment wasnt sure if they would want to finance that but public transportation=less people using cars=need less gass=demand goes down=gas prices go down.

If all non defense spendings are cut down (McCain) I dont think well see much of a public transportation.

"We are kidding ourselves if we think we can drill our way out of these problems," House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey, D-Wis., said during the bill mark-up session.

Exactly!

Yep, stand behind a failed policy no matter what. Your right, it makes no sense to try and get more of something we are short of.

For the record, McCain is with Obama on this one - he's also against drilling.

These remarks reflect exactly why we have high gas prices! All emotion based B.S.

In ANWR. I don't think he came out against drilling off our coasts or other places. This isn't just about Alaska. At any rate, if he is against drilling anywhere then there is another thing I don't agree with him on.

The failed policy was not taking a clue during the last energy crisis and developing ever larger SUV's to transport us from ever farther suburbs instead of developing alternative and more sustainable energy sources as well as promoting means of effective conservation.

McCain has stated that he'd support offshore drilling only if the affected states support it. Florida's Republican Governor (and potential McCain running mate) Charlie Crist oppses offshore drilling. Crist represents and stands with people of the state of Florida on the issue.

Also...if we started drilling now, it would be about 10 years before it'd be online, we're not sure how much we'll find but conservative estimates are about 2 percent of our current demand. This is a red herring. The oil companies don't want to talk about the bull in the china closet - demand. Reducing demand, particularly with regard to automobiles, is the single, most effective step we can take to deal with our current oil crisis.
