Hi everyone,

My fiance should be here on his visa within the next two weeks. We're planning a church wedding down the road but want to do the legal ceremony right away. In the state of Pennsylvania, one must have their Social security number and all the info on their parents. Does anyone know, can they use his visa number or alien number instead? How do we get around this? Thank you, Megan

I found this on a website and it sounds like it might hold true for all of Pennsylvania, not just Allegheny County. Usually state law governs marriages, so I doubt individual counties could have different rules.

You must present photo IDs, your Social Security cards (

or passport if you do not have a Social Security Number

) and a divorce decree, if previously married. You will need to know the following information to complete the form:

• Name, address, occupation
• Father’s name, birthplace, address and occupation
• Mother’s name, maiden name (if her married name is different), birthplace, address and occupation

I would call your local office where you arrange a marriage license and ask them if a foreigner needs a SSN to marry you or if they'll accept their passport as sufficient identification. I expect you'll be pleasantly surprised at their answer.

I would suggest you make inquiries in neighboring counties in your state. When we were applying for marriage license here in Kansas the first two counties we inquired has the requirement for me to have SSN. We were able to apply on the third county where the SSN of my husband was only asked and on my part only my passport were asked for identification . It might be the same there.
