Stores, Restaurants Pull Tomatoes

Some companies are pulling select tomatoes due to a Food and Drug Administration salmonella warning. So far, 145 people in 16 states have gotten sick from salmonella linked to tomatoes; 23 of those people were hospitalized.

There have been no reported cases in Florida so far, but stores and restaurants are pulling tomatoes from their shelves and menus.

Einstein Brothers Bagels posted signs alerting customers that they have no tomatoes. They pulled tomatoes voluntarily.

"On Saturday morning, we just pulled all our tomatoes," Einstein Brothers Bagels employee Clyde Plummer said.

The FDA is trying to track down where the contaminated tomatoes came from and until they do, it is safest to not eat certain kinds of tomatoes.

"I think itÂ’s a good precautionary thing to do just in case," Einstein Brothers Bagels customer Lori Hohman said.

Winn-Dixie supermarkets have pulled all tomatoes off its storesÂ’ shelves.

McDonaldÂ’s cut sliced tomatoes out of its menus. They will still serve grape tomatoes in salads.

Raw red roma, raw red plum and raw red round tomatoes are potentially contaminated.

The warning does not apply to cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes or tomatoes sold with the vine still attached.

I've had some roma tomatoes from TJ recently. I wonder if they're pulling them off the shelves too. Hmm, thinking about it, I was feeling a little queasy lately..... oh well, I do have an iron stomach and immune system.

Florida's tomato industry is in "complete collapse" and $40 million worth of tomatoes will rot unless federal regulators quickly trace the source of a salmonella outbreak and clear the state's produce, an industry official said on Tuesday.

"We probably have $40 million worth of product we can't sell. We've had to stop packing, stop picking," said Reggie Brown, executive vice president of the Florida Tomato Growers Exchange.

Mom and I got salmonella the day before this article posted. We thought it was the tomatoes too. She got it worse than me and had to stay home sick for three days.
