Iam a German Citizen and have my drivers license for 8 years already. Now my question when iam moving to North Carolina( thats why my future hubby lives at) can i write my license over to a US one by only taking a written test. Cause we called the Insurance and since i never had a US license i would be a first year driver which would increase the insurance amount quiet a bit. Does anybody have experience??

Hi

Ususally that is the case that you just exchange for US one and have to take a written and depending on the state maybe a small driving test. I traded my Bahamian License a long time ago in while in GA and had to do both tests.

Just go online and ask them at the DMV.

They would be able to tell you the process.

Good Luck

Steph25,

Each state is different - in Texas we had to do both the written and driving portion/tests (not a big deal as it is MUCH simpler and cheaper than in Germany...MUCH).

Insurance seemed a bit high (higher than in Germany for sure) but there is not much you can do - shop around and/or check to see if it's a better deal to get on with your husbands company. (Often times, if you have home-owners and auto insurance with the same company, you can work out a better deal...)

My wife traded her India license for an MD one. She took both the written and practical exam. If she had not traded her license, she would have had to take driving classes.
