Well, I haven't seen anyone marching into threads and correcting other people. Happy bunny's tip is actually a really useful one to remember - I often use it in my head to work out what I want to say before speaking - and I don't see anything wrong with a general discussion on grammar.

Get a grip. This isn't a grammar message board. As long as a the meaning is understood, the occasional spelling, punctuation, and grammar flub is not the end of the world.

hehe...

I agree. I have to admit to being one who typed "rediculous" a few times in the past. It wasn't a word I used or typed much until I became a member of VJ. Oh people had a good laugh at that misspelling back in the day. It annoys me more if spelling and grammar mistakes happen in a professional setting or a school setting. If I am chatting, which rarely happens, my grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation go out the window. It takes up too much time. lol

I'm with you on this one, Lisa! This thread makes me happy, too! :D

Another pet peeve of mine:

Confusing the words formally and formerly. Two totally different meanings!

I actually saw in a siggy: "So and so formerly proposed." :o:P

maybe the proposal was withdrawn afterward?

To me, it's just that we are in a casual setting, firing off messages here and there. We aren't submitting a thesis in front of an educational board. Yes, some people are much worse than others, but like I said, if I can understand what they are saying, I'm not going to get a bunch in my panties over it. I think it's funny to have the tables turned on a member of the grammar police when they slip up, and it DOES happen...heeheehee

 Pretty much.

I did laugh a while back at the assertion in an old thread about the writer's strike that bad grammar = bad writer.

From a foreigner point of view, sometimes it may be hard to understand what native English speakers are saying when they don't write correctly.

I've noticed that writing without proper grammar, spelling, etc. doesn't always go faster. It doesn't take that much time (unless you really can't find the right word to use, which does happen a lot to me).

Also, I've known lots of people who have said that the more they read bad writing (either like text messages, or spelling errors), the more they hesitate on how to write correctly. Like you've known how to write a word for your entire life and at one moment you start hesitating about it, because you've seen it written differently many times.

I'm not saying we should get rid of all the members who make mistakes (there wouldn't be anyone left on the forum :P) but I just don't agree completely with the "whatever... as long as it's understandable".
