ESPN's ticker thingy yesterday said something about a playoff "birth." I don't think it was a pun.

Take the other person out and see if the sentence makes sense....

'my wife and I went to the store'

'I went to the store'

'here is a picture of my husband and I'

'here is a picture of I'

This is how I was always taught to remember it!

I can't say many grammatical mistakes annoy me. I do notice them and I do try my best not to make any myself but at the end of the day I'm sure there's probably one or two I miss. For example, the other day I wrote 'less than' when I really should have written 'fewer than'.

My mother's pet peeve is 'different to'. I was yelled at so many times growing up for saying 'different to', even though I always managed to write it correctly ('different from').

I suppose the one thing that does aggravate me is how the younger generation is always accused of having terrible spelling and grammar but the older generation never want to accept blame for this, or acknowledge their own mistakes, even though I see plenty of shop signs and official letters from companies that contain quite obvious errors. My mother will never forget how she had to correct a spellings list that a primary school teacher had given to me to learn. I shall never forget how the local secretarial college had written on their posters, 'come to our student's open day!' (or something similar). Poor college, only having one student. The other day I was in the post office and noticed that the sign above their stationery counter was spelled 'Stationary'. I suppose the stationery is stationary, for the most part, but I don't think that's quite what they meant. :P

But it makes Jundp and I me I me happy ;)

yer not satisfied with being the apostrophe police?

Hehe, the I/Me thing is quickly gaining on my hatred of misused apostrophes ;)

1. It makes us happy because we're nerds.

2. They're/there/their

3. Your/you're

I really don't want to be an annoying grammar and syntax policeman(woman) but it does annoy me. I fully understand that many people here are NOT native English speakers and I wouldn't try to write in German without expecting mistakes (many) but I can't change that it annoys me :)

Even though I agree that many people who are not native English speakers make these mistakes (I probably do it too in a while), I'd like to add that it annoys me a lot more when the ones who don't get it right are native English speakers. And it does happen a lot.

Oh, certainly! And most of the time they have no real excuse, either.

Okay, here is something that does peeve me: When Americans 'correct' perfectly correct British-English, or call our use of certain words (whilst, for example) 'pretentious'. It hasn't happened here, but I have seen it happen on other forums.
