currently i'm in the states on my k-1 visa.... i've been here for a little more than 2 weeks and i was planning on applying for a ssn tomorrow. i printed off the ssn application and i was confused as to what to check off in terms of citizenship: legal alien allowed to work OR legal alien not allowed to work. as of right now, i'm not allowed to work so that would be the obvious answer... but eventually i will be able to work... i just want to know that im filling it out correctly. please help?

As of right now you are legal alien not allowed to work, once you get your EAD you will have to go back to the SSA office to change your status.

I beg to differ, as a K-1, for the first 90 days after entry, you are a LEGAL ALIEN ALLOWED TO WORK.... This is what should be checked on the SS-5 application....

Legal alien allowed to work.

I filled out the form and then visited the SSN office. They tap in your visa details and then print out another form that you just sign.

The whole process took just under an hour and the SSN came through the post a week later.

One of the easier steps in this ridiculously long process.

If you go to the Social Security office they can help you fill out the form and then you'll know for sure that it's right. My husband did that and they were very patient going over all of it with him.

You don't even need the application form (SS-5) at all. The SSA employee will enter all the info into the computer and printout an application for you to sign after making sure everything is correct.
