How did everyone get their computer to the USA??? More specifically, from Australia.

I've read a few posts about people putting the computer tower in their checked bags, but my fiance is not so sure he wants to do that. Is there a better shipping option and which is more dependable/inexpensive? I've thought about looking into DHL and UPS but am guessing it may be quite expensive.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

Hi

I will be shipping mine from the uk and am going to use a shipping company, they provide special boxes for computer towers etc. You may be able to do a search for shipping companies in Aus

is it the only thing you're shipping, or are you bringing other stuff? I just shipped a whole load of stuff from Aus (and from the UK... long story ;) ), and found Grace Removals to be really excellent; they had the lowest price (I also had quotes from Crown and Allied Pickfords, who had been the best in the UK), as well as by far the best customer service

I didn't ship a computer with them - I have a laptop, so brought it in my hand luggage - but they asked questions about speciality items like that, and had all manner of special shipping for things that needed extra care (eg I was bringing a glass-topped table, so they crated it and boxed it separately, for a very minimal extra charge)

I'd recommend at least giving them a call and seeing what they tell you :)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

I'm just going to take mine to pieces, bring the hard drive and rebuild my puter when I get to the US :)

When moving from Ireland, I just sold mine put all my important stuff on a couple of DVD's. Although I did take my (then) half decent graphics card and some extra RAM to boost up my wifes... emachine :dead: For me at least the cost of shipping the weight just didn't make it worthwhile! I ended up building another machine about a year later...

If you do ship it I'm sure you won't forget to flip the wee red switch on the back of the PSU so your running at 110v not 220v/240v when your first attempt to boot in the US!.. I know someone that once flipped the switch while it was turned on.. they won't be doing that again in a hurry

Good Luck!!

Thanks for the replies!

He's pretty attached to it (he built it a couple of years ago) so I think we may just end up eating the cost to ship it ($400AUS or so)..

It's the only thing he needs to ship or else we'd go with a larger carrier.

I did double check to make sure it had the power switch. So all I do is switch it to 110 and it's good to go? Or is there anything else I should know??

We shipped my PC and everything else with Grace Brothers Removals in Adelaide, brilliant they were and very reasonable cost I made sure i had a power convertor put on prior, so all i had to do when arrived in the US was to flick the switch over.

Once it's in the US go to a computer store and buy a standard power cord, flip to the switch to 110 and away you go. Might be an idea (if it was me anyway) to put a sicker maybe on the PSU before shipping reminding to switch to 110 in the US before using or just flipping it before packing it.
