I don't get how someone could feel ideologically threatened by a book to the extent that they'd try to destroy it.

There are many books I don't care for. I don't burn them.

Strange that.

You probably just don't *GASP* read them.

Oh wait....guess what? I bet the IHOP people never read Harry Potter either.

Wait, why haven't they burned the Golden Compass?

Nah - I've read a few. Graham Swift's Waterland and pretty much anything by Salman Rushdie (though I only attempted Midnight's Children). Utter garbage.

(that's how I feel about Hemingway)

(I know that makes me a non-academic)

(w/e)

(I really REALLY hate his stuff)

Well it was only a matter of time before someone suggested that - presumably because the muslim extremists are perceived as being more violent it somehow makes the Christian nutjob book burners somehow ok.

Um, no. I didn't say it to make nutjob Christians look better. I said it because if you are going to be an idiot, might as well go all out. And based on Muslim extremists' reactions to lesser offences (they are extremists after all), I doubt reprisal would be completely unexpected. I don't see that much of a difference between burning Harry Potter and burning the Koran, beyond the fact that I don't think that there are people willing to kill themselves for Harry. Which reminds me why no one should get so wrapped up in a single book in the first place. But Harry Potter is just a book when you put it like that, or...?

That said, I don't see the point in book burnings besides that you want to be an ####### who wants look hardcore around the rest of your arsehole friends.

I didn't "get" Hemingway until I was a little older - although I think it probably helps to be a man.

I have no problems with the burning of books for being bad. Harry Potter is top of my list!

He was like Faulkner to me...I wanted to scream "just say it already" but that would have scared the dog. And I'm a creative writing teacher....

Personal preference, I suppose. I mean, I love Austen and Shakespeare and many people just shudder at that.

Since we're banning bad, evil things, we'd better ban this....

the boys i mean are not refined

the boys i mean are not refined

they go with girls who buck and bite

they do not give a f#ck for luck

they hump them thirteen times a night

one hangs a hat upon her #######

one carves a cross on her behind

they do not give a sh!t for wit

the boys i mean are not refined

they come with girls who bite and buck

who cannot read and cannot write

who laugh like they would fall apart

and masturbate with dynamite

the boys i mean are not refined

they cannot chat of that and this

they do not give a fart for art

they kill like you would take a piss

they speak whatever’s on their mind

they do whatever’s in their pants

the boys i mean are not refined

they shake the mountains when they dance

(Bonus points to the person who can name that poet WITHOUT looking on Google....)

Faulkner takes 234 words to say what Hemingway only needs 3 words to say.

I love Faulkner. I have re-read all his books a few times and always find something new. Different strokes!

:) Yes, but I can appreciate what that you appreciate it.

And Platy, that has to be cummings....or Shel Silverstein?

Probably not fair considering what I do for a living.

But only he and Silverstein have poems like that. And Paul Currington. Ok, a number of people.
