Who's 'teaching' Harry Potter? It's a work of fiction that might possibly used as a study book in English literature - although I would be surprised. Maybe they should promote the idea that the bible is studied as 'literature' as apposed to 'fact'?

Well to be honest we weren't "taught" those books in the UK. I read them - but they weren't in anything sort of school-related.

Blyton's books were criticised subsequently - specifically in regard to racism because they reflected the politics of the time they were written (there's a whole other controversy regarding the Golliwog - wihch featured in some of her books - but nothing like the sort of mad OTT furore that would brew up over here) . Its a bit of a non-issue these days because Blyton's books (Noddy specifically) were revised to make them more politically correct for the times.

Again as they're not "taught" in schools I presume the issue is whether or not they are actually sold in stores and made available to children to read - which is a whole other issue entirely.

Exactly - my thinking is that you have to feel somewhat threatened about something in order to justify burning a book. As usual its about fear and ignorance.

Well it was only a matter of time before someone suggested that - presumably because the muslim extremists are perceived as being more violent it somehow makes the Christian nutjob book burners somehow ok.

We should surely all know by now that any kind of book burning (like flag burning) is reprehensible regardless who is doing it. And to who.

Face it, a lot of you can make fun of them burning books, but they have a point. I mean why in the world would any school or teacher use a Harry Potter book to teach in a school is beyond reason, I would be seriously upset if my kid was getting that, it is school not romper room play time! What a waste of taxpayer money! Porn is for adults not kids, and it is not a thing that is really good for anyone that is truly normal and of sound mind. Why can't these people protest, every other radical far left out of touch weirdo is allowed to do this in the USA, so why not these people! We mock what we do not understand.

There's a difference between protesting and burning books. Book burning is symbolic of taking away freedom of thought. Yes, the Nazis did it. Many people have done it. That doesn't mean it's right. People get all up in arms over flags being burned as well. It's "just" a flag...

I've long had Harry Potter books on my summer reading lists for English literature. There are some amazingly great philosophical and mythological references in HP that students (of a higher academic level) can refer to and use as allegory. They are just a few of the many books students have to choose from, but they are there because some kids are reluctant readers and if that's what it takes to get them to pick up a book, then I'm willing to let them. In my experience, the kids who have read HP then move on to more difficult forms of literature more easily. Of course, I also have taught the Narnia books for the same reason.
