I still want to know what income level has to do with the legitimacy of a relationship....

Well, wouldn't a scammer be more interested in a spouse that is good to well off? I don't see what enhancing the requirements at the lower income levels will do about the fact that most scammers want either green cards, a good amount of money, or both.

Would go a long way to cut down on scam and fraud marriages.

I can't imagine this process being any harder on us then it was.

i was thinking the same thing

i dont think amount of meetings or raise this fee or that fee would change anything .........if someone is wanting to do marriage fraud it would just make them think of new ways to do it and truly if that is what someone is after the amount of time u have to wait wont make any difference to them.........they have an agenda if they are fraudulent all this does it make it harder for those of us that are are for real and just want to get on with the rest of our lifes

Rightttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt! It is called a deterrent, which is put in place to thwart and make it so unattractive for all the scammers and fraudsters that they give up and decide it is not worth it, and you know it would be too hard on those people because they are doing it since it is so easy and fast and quick for them that is why!

Is immigration too easy? Is America's current immigration system too open or too restrictive

heaven's no! it is not too easy... it has been bloody hell...

i can't speak for people who come here on a visitor visa and adjust status that way,

but for us... it has been the most heartwrenching time of our lives... (and our case wasn't even that bad... considering there are others out there, stuck in Administrative Processing for months on end... years!) (F)(F)

now i've gone and spilled my coffee...

If someone really wants to scam the system, they'll find a way no matter how many restrictions are put in place.

I say make all the people with entitlement complexes wait twice as long. And hire more people to process petitions/applications.

In a recent column on TangoMag.com a group of overweight women revealed what seems to be a growing concern among their cohort: That foreigners are marrying women with weight problems strictly to gain U.S. citizenship. And though the assertions in the column were made out of personal experience rather than concrete proof, hard data on "fake marriages" seems to back them up.

Recent figures released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement showed that one in five of the marriages they investigated turned out to be "fake," and that quickie marriages between American citizens and citizenship-seeking foreigners has become a multimillion dollar business. Is immigration too easy? Is America's current immigration system too open or too restrictive

Interesting topic, however this blurb above is barely worth reading, it's all fluff with nothing to back it up. They have a group of overweight women that claim foreigners are marrying women with weight problems etc etc.

Why not women marrying men who are underweight and lanky, or elderly, or single mothers looking for extra cash or whatever.

What a bunch of poppycock.

The only thing that would deter scammers would be to change the law to deportation if divorced but the only problem with this is control issues by the USC. Fees and income increases are not the solution. I do think the conditional LPR sould be extended to 3 years and then you chose LPR or citizenship at this time. I do think divorce in the 3 year period should be automatic deportation but again too much control for the USC, maybe if you came here based on marriage and you divorce you are inelligable to bring a spouse here for 10 years or not at all? And maybe the wait for citizenship is 10 years under this situation.

The problem in the US is not with legal immigrants and I don't think anyone on VJ have a problem with legal immigrants, if they do then they shouldn't be on this website.

Some people posted that no matter how nieve or desperate someone is that it still wrong for someone to scam them well technically yes but still everyone is responsible for their own actions. When you marry someone that if the were American wouldn't give you the time of day then you are potentially taking a big risk.

 exactly

Another is to marry in the USA with the correct visa. Any non US citizen can marry there on a toursit visa.

Yes!! And nobody should be allowed to adjust status from just any visa too. No short cuts.

Like I said before. The only people who can most effectively check fraud are the two people involved in the relationship. DO NOT IGNORE THE RED FLAGS... They are there for a reason

In the UK, you have to have a fiance visa to marry. Can't be done on a tourist visa.
