Happy Sunday everyone...

I have a question about the shaved cats from earlier this week - figured I wouldn't dig out the other topics thinking amal and jackie maybe around...

Umm, I've never had my cats groomed/clipped for the summer. They are short-mid hair legnth cats. Never even contemplated it before. They seem ok, even in today's heat. What are the benefits of shaving the cats? Since they are older [10 and 7], I'm thinking even bringing it up at this point may be a little traumatic for them but if it makes them more comfy...

I don't know - I'm just a little confused.

I've teased Amal to death about this but now I'm starting to think about doing the same thing to mine. Both of mine are medium/long haired.

I've been shaving CatBob for quite some time now. His hair tends to matt up really bad and he gets insane hairballs. He also is allergic to his hair and gets hot spots in the summer so for his health it is best to shave him about two to three times per year.

I shaved Ivory (the siamese mix) coz she had reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally thick thick thick hair and we couldn't get rid of the fleas no matter how often we gave her a bath so we decided to shave her and see how it worked. So far, so good. This was her first time and she didn't do too bad.

If u take ur cat to a professional groomer, they'll put ur cat out to groom it. I don't like that and I'm poor as a church mouses mouse SOOOOOOOO I opted to do it myself.

CatBob does well till we get to his belly..then he freaks out so its not easy. Ivory...well she's always a spaz.

my cat is a long hair cat, i usually do it around spring and fall due to him getting hair mats around that time. during spring i do tend to trim more of his belly hair as it keeps him cooler.

eta: it never is a major issue of traumatizing him when i do that. he complains about it by meowing a lot, but he's never hurt and he's probably used to it by now as i've been doing this for about 9 years.

Ooooh, ok - that makes sense! I had only one cat that had any matting issues and would only clip out the individual mats. Thankfully, no flea issues or hotspots either with my guys.

I do usually comb them out every couple of weeks. Sometimes even with a flea comb which is great because this time of year the comb cleans up my marmie's under coat. I guess it sort of like that special shedding comb that was advertised on tv a few years back.

I had been thinking two things actually - that grooming cats was just getting popular and people are out there clipping and cutting for fun/fashion or that it was a heat/coat issue. Matting and other funky skin issues never even crossed my mind!
