If traffic is that bad, why does any train need to be faster than going by car without traffic?

You depend on two things leaving your car at home: The carriers schedule and local public transportation at your destination. The former is an inconvenience and the latter more often than not simple not available.

Amtrak is ridiculous. I used to live in Sacramento and would want to come to LA to visit my parents for the weekend and the Amtrak prices....and travel times...were always WAY more than bus or plane. I was like....why would I take the stupid train then...unless I'm afraid of flying or something.

Trains are really the way to go...they're beautiful. I can sleep on the train on my way to work and i feel so much more refreshed once I get there. Not like when I drove and sat in traffic all morning. I would be pissed off by the time I set foot at work and always had a bad day.

I think it just takes some getting used to. if you have a train near it is more conveinent. You learn to walk more and take public transporation and you realize how little u need your car sometime. Even now, I find myself walking to stores and shops and errands even when I have my car near me.

The problem is that there often is no public transportation. I know there isn't any out here. Well, we do have a bus or two that run through the county.

You can choose to live near public transportation.

Well this is why I say its a good idea. Of course the transportation needs to be built..but if it was there it would work great!

I considered public transport in LA but it was a bit of a joke really

Well you have to actually live in LA proper or close surrounding cities. Many people say LA and are really talking about the valley or something. In LA the Metro is cool. Then all the surrounding local city buses. But if you live in the valley or something forget about it.

Agreed. I am a big fan of good public transportation systems. I hardly use the car when visiting home - Berlin, Germany.

Only if you live in one of a handful of major cities. The vast majority of American urban areas lack an efficient public transportation system. And there isn't anything resembling public transport in the sticks.

I know! I fell in love with NYC cause of their metro system. It was my first trip there and I was by myself and I figured out the trains in like a day or 2.

Arlington...I kinda know where that is. Well, Pasadena has a train that goes there now. It cool cause Pasadena was one of those hard cities to get to before.

To be fair, the investment in public transportation doesn't make sense if there isn't a dense enough population.

 Very true.
