Obama and Clinton Meet in Washington

Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton held a private meeting tonight at her home on Whitehaven Street in Washington, a session initiated by Mrs. Clinton after a daylong series of talks between their aides.

Mr. Obama, who was scheduled to fly back to Chicago tonight following a rally in northern Virginia, stayed behind in Washington to meet with his former rival. He shed his campaign plane — and the traveling press corps and entourage — to see Mrs. Clinton.

Two senior Democratic officials familiar with the talks, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter, said Mrs. Clinton asked Mr. Obama to sit down tonight for a meeting.

She is planning to endorse Mr. Obama on Saturday at a farewell rally with her supporters in Washington. Mr. Obama is scheduled to be in Chicago that day.

Clinton Backs Off Veep

She doesn't rule it out, but Wolfson makes clear to the Times' Adam Nagourney that she doesn't think she can demand it.

While Sen. Clinton has made clear throughout this process that she will do whatever she can to elect a Democrat to the White House, she is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her. The choice here is Sen. Obama's and his alone.

This is, of course, the only approach that has any chance of getting her the office.
