They maybe give one hoot, but that's just because John Candy and Wayne Gretzky owned the Toronto Argonauts.

I am trying to win this argument by comparing the audience for the Stanley Cup Finals with the CFL playoffs. Obviously the Stanley Cup does better, even when there is not a Canadian team playing (and the CFL are obviously all Canadian teams). My opponent is now trying to cheat and add the CFL and NFL audiences together which even then only slightly exceeds the Stanley Cup

Nope. Your opponent's not gonna win his case. The CFL teams don't get the fans; ergo the financial support and salaries are weak. That's why John Candy and Wayne Gretzky bought the Argos. They wanted to drum up interest in the game. Didn't work for them, either.

Hockey. Though rkl did make a mistaken assumption that all CFL teams are Canadian (actually, the league has some ex-USFL teams), CFL has a poor fanship amongst Canadians--more of whom will watch NFL over CFL.

Best stated in 1987, when Montreal was trying to boast that it could host an NFL franchise at Olympics Stadium--when the Alouettes were about to give-up-ghost altogether.

Gretzky and Candy owning Argos would cause maybe a small percentage of Pigtowners (aka Torontonians) to give some hoot--but Toronto (contrary to its arrogance) does not represent all of Canada by any means!

FYI, the OFFICIAL national sport of Canada is................Lacrosse!

The CFL is particularly popular in the prairie provinces, but hockey is country-wide baby!

Although it could be argued that basketball is closing the gap.

I do know lots of Canadians who love NFL better than the CFL. I don't know why since the CFL is a better game to me.
