hey guys....don't know if i'm getting too caught up in the mechanics of all this.....but i see that we need 'copies' of original documents - i get that - but how bout if my fiance (in argentina) scans the pages of his passport, e-mails them to me and i print them.....they are copies but when I use a printer the quality of the photos are not very good.....probly a bad idea? so i need real photocopy copies? or are these poor quality version sufficient as long as we have the original for the interview? (I'm getting caught in the language of the coverletter from this website that says "copies of documents submitted are exact photocopies...."

a legible copy is all that is needed... doesn't matter if it is xerox, minolta, canon, toshiba or scanned to an image and printed or faxed.

YMMV

There is no practical difference between scanned and copied documents except that one is a one-step process and the other requires two steps to get a printed copy. A photocopier scans and prints in one operation.

i'm actually using ALL scanned copies. i scan at work, email to myself, and then print. my fiancee has also scanned her passport in mongolia and emailed that, along with many other docs to me. this way i have a full set of scans, so if i ever need to print again - i have everything ready to go, sitting right there on the computer. will never have to 'copy' anything again. also - i plan on being at the interview so if anything goes wrong i'll have a full set of scans ready to go there. i know, only originals may be needed there, but i'm just covering all my bases.

but here's the trick - make sure that they choose 'color photo' for the scan setting. i tried the lesser black and white setting and yes, it was horrible/illegible. when using the color photo setting the copies are outstanding - and it's much easier to read the passport stamps in their original color.

and if my fiancee can find a color scanner in mongolia - you'll have no problem finding one in argentina. :)

good luck.
